I love this book full heartedly. The only reasons I’m given it a four out of five is because it had two cons for me.
1. Gemma annoyed me more than anything because she is not that bright. I know she is panicked and all that but she tried to escape three times. I mean really do you think being in the middle of the desert you could survive to reach civilisation? No so stop trying. And how it took her so long to figure out she was in Australia, I mean come on it’s hot, he smells of eucalyptus and he has a hint of an Australian accent.
2. Tys trauma. When he was younger he went through trauma by being taken away from when he was use too, too going into an environment he has no idea about. The things that’s a con for me is that he deals with it by “seeing” himself in her. Dude talk about it don’t do that!!! Or find a hobby like your painting.
Now my pros
1. I adored how he loved the land and how he loved to paint it with the land it’s self. The image my head was beautiful with how content he looked in the shed he painted in. This made me have a have a soft spot for him, along with con two because it makes him seem imperfect like everyone else (and especially when he kidnapped Gemma. BUT IM NOT EXCUSING HIM. HE DOSE DESERVE TIME IN JAIL ALONG WITH THERAPY).
2. He seems like a guy you could have a drink with late at night and just open up too. He has a lot of potential if he didn’t have to deal with his trauma. I believe if he gets help he could do great things, but then I remember he’s not real and I’m going too deep.

I remember loving this book when I was younger. I mean, I loved it enough to keep it all these years. But in my journey to reread the books I own, I’m finding a lot of them don’t hit like they used to. This book just felt so repetitive. I think it would have had a lot more emotional impact as a short story rather than a novel. I looked up what happens in the sequel just to be safe and am quite sure I’m not interested so… there you go. Two stars only because younger me loved it so much otherwise it would be one.
In this novel we follow a teenage girl who has been kept in captive in the middle of nowhere. Told in the way of a letter to her captor, Ty, she narrates her day by day experience of trying to escape from this madman. But when she came to the realization that there's no way out of this place, she eventually got to know her captor and started to develop feelings for him.
This book has been on my TBR for a long time and maybe if I read it back when I was still a young adult, I would have enjoyed it and appreciated it more. My reading experience with this book was underwhelming. I did not enjoy it at all and found it a bit dragging. Like, nothing was happening for the first couple of pages and I read for more than a week given that the book is very short. I just didn't look forward to the story and I couldn't connect with the characters.

At times hard to read... But really well written and a great story. I really enjoyed this.

I mainly read fantasy, but this book, this book is one of the best Ive ever read. It is written in such a unique and intriguing way, and the story is just absolutley amazing.
Wow. Let me start off by saying this book is originally different from any book I've ever read. The way Gemma describes what she's going through, it's almost as though you're living the experience with her. In some ways I could also relate to Gemma. I would've done many of the things she did if I was in her place. All in all, amazing book.

I read this when I was a teenager and I absolutely loved it then. I know it has problematic themes in that it is sorts romanticizing kidnapping, but I think the way it ends with very clear statements that she’s suffering from what happened makes it clear that this isn’t okay… and it instead portrays how absurd and horrible the situation was.
