This book has a very interesting concept! It describes a world where young girls have a unique power to inflict pain and death on others with a shock. The power awakens in girls around the ages of 14-15 and they can reawaken the power in older women. So essentially all women (with the exception of some due to various reasons (hormonal, etc.)) now have this power and men are fearful for their lives. Suddenly the tables have turned….
I liked the concept and the story but I didn’t quite get the ending. It seemed like every chapter was building to some great world war but the book ends before this conflict actually happens. I felt cheated and wanted more. And as great as the book was on flipping the narrative of rape culture on men, it still fell flat for me near the middle and end. Overall though, this was a decent book - 3 stars.

“It doesn't matter that she shouldn't, that she never would. What matters is that she could, if she wanted. The power to hurt is a kind of wealth.”
I think that the sci-fi premise of this book is interesting, and the political and social ramifications of said premise would no doubt be revolutionary. I found myself frustrated, though. At times, I felt like the study into gender politics lacked subtlety or nuance; other times, the novel seemed to have lacked any sort of finesse in world building. Overall, though, there were some interesting and somewhat controversial and cynical ideas presented about the effectiveness and peacefulness of matriarchal societies and the inception of female-centric revolutions.

I just feel like When Women were Dragons and the Handmaid's Tale did it better. I had a hard time believing the characters were real.
OMG I adored this book. It was a little unsettling (in a good way) and gave me much to ponder, while still being full of great action and drama. It’s a dystopian work about what society would be like if women around the world suddenly developed a special “power” – it’s basically the opposite of The Handmaid’s Tale (and since reading it, I learned that Margaret Atwood actually worked with the author on some of her ideas, so this makes total sense). Highly recommend.
Montgomery-Taylor, aquela vaca doente merecia.

I thought I would love this book. But I had a few problems with it. I didn’t like the sexualisation and rape. I understand that there’s a big reflection of our society and gender norms. But I was a bit disappointed, in a way I’m having a hard time articulating. I thought the POVs were well picked.
I loved the last sentence of the book.
