I'm calling it now.

Garrett's dad is a dragon.

Or maybe I'm just an idiot?

I’m finally starting to get really into this series. I’m liking Ember more and more. The action is getting more intense the more secrets that are revealed. The love triangle is sort of resolved (though not to my liking).
Ember has really grown. She knows that she needs to do whatever it takes to fight Talon. She doesn’t shy away from the hard things anymore. While they still bother her, she understands what she needs to do. I really loved the moment she had where she was in her head and came face to face with her dragon. That really made me happy because the separation in Ember’s mind of her dragon and the human side was something I complained about in my review for the last book.
I liked that while Garret and Riley still had their own chapters, they sort of took a backseat to the other characters. I still like them both, but this book was meant for Dante and Ember to shine.
Dante makes me so mad. I just want him to come to Ember’s side and understand that everything he thinks he knows is a lie. I hate that he’s being fooled and I’m really hoping to see him learn the truth in the final book.
Overall, this one was probably my favorite of the series so far. I’m excited to read the final book in the series and finally finish this story.

At about a quarter through, Jade left. She's my favorite! I liked Ember at first but her storyline has become more and more boy centric.

Previously the multiple first person point of views didn't confuse me much but this time I kept forgetting who "I" was supposed to be.

Riley and company actually staked out the building before going charging in. Why wasn't this standard procedure? How many traps would they have avoided if they were a little cautious?

SOLIDER BOY IS ALIVE!! They really had me thinking he was dead there but nope. Now this actually leads into my only flaw for this series is that the stakes have begun to feel empty since everyone lives like they had a chance to kill off Tristan and Jade but they don’t. Which takes all the emotional impact out of the moment. I do like the return of mist and I have a feeling her employer is the Archivist dragon. And the shit with ember and the elder wyrm is genuinely nightmare level stuff. Interested to see how they wrap this series up

I mean if you’ve read all the way to book four, you either love this series and nothing I’m going to say is going to sway you or you have a serious case of unfinished series avoidance (that’s me).

Anyways I went back and read my review of Soldier (book 3) and well I guess there’s improvement. LOVE TRIANGLE GONE! But that’s kinda the only exciting part of this book. With so many narrators (four!) this book moves at an incredibly slow pace, something my seething over the love triangle seems to have masked. It’s not even a short book, it’s just that a three minute encounter expands into half an hour of narration because we have to hear from Cobalt, Ember, and Garrett - and even still there really are no repeat moments (the narration never backtracks).

However, I enjoyed quite a few little parts of this book. First has to be the weird sci-fi adventure in the middle of the book
Spoiler EMBER ALMOST GETS HER MIND WIPED
and the ensuing introspection that leads Ember to make some VERY important life choices. While the action was perhaps a bit lackluster in this book compared to its predecessors, we finally have everyone working together in a civilized manner and testosterone battles and hissy fits kept to a minimum and I think the smoothness that affords the book is more than worth it.

Stuff is really coming together: I think we’ve finally uncovered what Talon is trying to do and a few of the possible endings have been laid out too. What I appreciate most about this series is how identity has been such a major issue and I really hope the finale gives us some resolution or at least peace.
