I think I may have liked it even better than the first one - although the plot is getting even more fantastic because (without giving anything away) who could survive all that?!

I love the recipes at the end of each chapter and found that they slightly relieved the tension while also further immersing me in the story’s setting. I also want to try making a few of them!

My only real issue with the story was the author’s somewhat (IMO) idealized vision of Hannah Archer. Seriously. That is no woman, ever.

This was a really great read, more like 4.5 stars

I love the characters and the development of the story with all the complications that arise. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is because in a few parts I got a little lost, when complicated things were happening or were introduced.

Dominika Egorova and Nate Nash are back. Dominka is back at the SVR and working her way up the ladder, despite her boss trying to kill her. Nate is running a new GRU agent out of Greece. There's an American traitor who is trying to leak Domi's name, and the CIA is trying to track them down before he can do it.

I like the fact that Domi and Nate are often working on different cases or different agents, or even different pieces of the same puzzle. All the story lines work, tying loosely together and holding my attention without feeling forced. There's lots of good action and the story is very gritty. It's clear that Jason Matthews has been there and done that.

I'm giving this one 5 stars... it's a really strong 4.5+, probably closer to 4.75, and the last one, which I gave 4 stars, was probably 4.5. So the average works.

Solid spy thriller. Not quite as good as Red Sparrow, the first in the series, but still a good second installment. Overall, it's very pro-CIA as Jason Matthews is an alum. While he depicts some baddies in the agency - mostly stupid bureaucrats - and one really bad spook, he never touches on all of the CIA's many failings over the years, particularly how they missed 9/11. He takes cheap shots at Snowden, but never mentions perhaps the greatest sin ever committed by an intelligence agency in modern times -- how the CIA participated in the Bush-Cheney effort to lie us into an unjustified war. He does do a good job in portraying how Putin is a thug and the threat Russia now poses. I'm sure I'll read the next installment, but I'd wish that he would be a bit more like Le Carre and not be so glowing about his service. Spooks turned intelligence into a one-word oxymoron.

The magical team of Nate, Gable, Forsyth and Domi is back with more intrigue, deceit, treason, clandestine operations, and a lot more Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.
It is hard to follow the pace of Book#1 Red Sparrow, but JM has done it. Again, I have been able to augment my vocabulary through fantastic choice of words, read through many more exciting recipes at the end of each chapter and have been thoroughly entertained by this page turner.
The story is intense, pace is perfect, lead characters are impressive and the technicality is fabulous. The only way the book loses its touch is because of its over exuberance in portraying its characters. I find it hard to believe that everyone at CIA are these noble creatures, whereas any Russian we encounter (barring a couple) are in the words of Domi - "nekulturny" or ugly and disgusting. It seems very uni-dimensional, including President Putin.
I will hope the final part of the trilogy is equally enthralling and keeps me busy for a few many days when it comes out in February
