I read this after I had read “The Proposal” and really really enjoyed it!! Such enjoyable characters and brought tension to keep it moving, but not too much to take the fun out of it!

While this was a fun read with some sweet moments and an especially sweet epilogue, it’s definitely not the best romance I’ve read. I loved Alexa and many of the side characters—Maddie, Theo, Carlos, Lauren, and Jack in particular—but I don’t know what I think of Drew. Some of the things he said rubbed me the wrong way, and his apologies always felt half-baked, like he was apologizing because he knew he was supposed to, not because he actually felt bad. Additionally, Alexa and Drew’s weekend routine of fast food and nearly constant sex was rather repetitive. I would’ve preferred more time spent with side characters to so much of the same old stuff. I think Guillory has potential, though, so I’ll likely read more of her books in the future.

Representation
  • fat Black protagonist
  • side characters of color (includes Black, Korean, and Latine rep)
  • minor achillean side couple (m/m)

When lawyer-turned-civil-servant Alexa Monroe and pediatric surgeon Drew Nichols get trapped in a hotel elevator, sparks fly over cheese and crackers. Drew asks Alexa to pose as his fake girlfriend at his ex's wedding to one of his best friends, and they enjoy a weekend of great chemistry, cute banter, and steamy sex, which quickly turns into regular weekend trips to see each other for more of the same, with the addition of some deliciously described takeout and countless donuts and cups of coffee.

Though our primary couple could have used a few more deep conversations to avoid the mopey chapters (miscommunication is an unfortunate trope of the genre), I generally appreciated Guillory's ability to integrate real-life issues into the story. That Drew and Alexa are an interracial couple is significant to the story without overwhelming their relationship, and I appreciated reading about their interests and personalities beyond the (literal) surface. Alexa's art rehabilitation program for at-risk youth had powerful motivations and legs to stand on, and Drew's relationship with his young patients was heartbreaking and beautiful. I loved the way the characters--Drew and Alexa, as well as all the friends and family that popped in--supported each other and balanced their discussions of serious and playful topics.

My sister recommended me this book and I managed to pass her in our reading progress in a day. This book read so effortlessly, it was just what I was looking for after a crazy stressful few days of work. The banter between Alexa and Drew was effortless and hilarious. I loved both characters immediately (I, too, bonded over their love of cheese and crackers in that elevator).

I appreciate that the "fake relationship that got real" trope that we all knew was coming was more than just the wedding weekend. I was a little nervous when the wedding weekend wrapped up after chapter 9 and there was still so much of the book to go. We all knew the breakdown in communication was coming eventually, but it still hit so hard when it did, because they had otherwise communicated so well with each other.

Having done the weekend relationship thing myself, (though not quite in a state as large as California), I totally related to how engrossed in their weekend lives they both became. I remember those days with fond, rose-colored glasses.

I wasn't sure if I would be invested enough to read a 5-6+ book series, but now I just might! These books are a great "palate cleanser" book between book club/book slump books to get you back on the reading horse and fall in love with reading again.

Super cute romantic read. At times it felt a little repetitive, but it was generally really fun.
