I’ve read this book cover to cover at least 3 times now and still love it
I was wandering around the house, searching my parents many bookshelves for a new book to read, when my mum recommended this one to me: Sophie’s Heart.
I am so glad I took her advice and read it!! I loved it so much. This book has felt like a big warm hug from God.
It’s full of such wonderful Godly characters as well as wisdom for how to handle different situations.
Most of all, it has encouraged me to continue passionately seeking God’s will for my life.
“It was Sophie’s heart, yes, but more importantly, God’s heart. Sophie knew there was no safer place to abide.”

My favorite book by her, I reread it at least once a year
I have read this book probably fifteen times since I was young. I can't explain why I love this book but I do.
One of my favourite Christian fiction books EVER. I need to get my own copy, but I read a library copy a couple of times years ago. Five stars!
Edited August 2023 - I finally have my own copy coming.

Five things about Sophie’s Heart by Lori Wick 📚📚📚📚📚
1. This was a reread for me. I first read this back in the 1990s and remembered living it. Last year, I sought out a copy of it for a revisit. This month, I finally reread it.
2. It’s a Christian romance and a lot more “preachy” than I prefer nowadays. There’s definitely that tinge of classic evangelical influence that was very much the norm in 90s North American mainstream Christianity. A side character that doesn’t want his girlfriend wearing pants and other such absurd nonsense…but the main characters (still very preachy) are pretty down to Earth about their faith. And it is a product of its time.
3. All that aside, you can’t help but fall in love with the character of Sophie. A well educated Czech woman who speaks multiple languages and was a government translator before winning a green card lottery and immigrating to the States. In the States she must work as a fast food dishwasher and then a housekeeper. She’s strong, stubborn, funny, vulnerable…she feels real and the reader falls for her. Ditto for the kids she takes care of as a housekeeper. They’ve lost their mother (I think you can see where this romance is headed) and the way Wick writes their grief is so real and raw and heartfelt.
4. I cannot say the same for the romantic lead. I often just found him kind of lackluster and business oriented. The book actually points this out at one point. I didn’t believe their romance at all and that was a little confusing because Wick can obviously write emotionally charged characters and relationships as evidenced in this very book. It’s obvious she wanted their romance to be more logical than emotional and I wanted more for Sophie.
5. Overall, this is a solid read whatever your faith. Some parts definitely did not work for me but the character of Sophie has stayed with me for decades and rereading this, I understand why.
