- i expected a happy ending for daiyu, but i didn’t and that re-taught me the lesson that in real life, there aren’t truly happy endings most of the time. however, i think she was at peace, finally not battling against her namesake, and that’s good enough
- truly truly appalling how asians were treated during the enactment of the exclusion act. like, i realize how bad it was, but it shocks me everytime i read about it still and makes me grateful to live in a time where even through covid racism i could have the law back me just a little
- i appreciated how the author allowed daiyu to have romantic feelings even after her sexual assault. brings light to the fact that victims aren’t broken, they can recover
- lots of themes on the attempt for white and male supremacy
- samuel :(
- such amazing writing and bringing back to chinese folklore, gave it a nostalgic and old-timey aura and also brought me back to the days of listening to viet folktales. really made me able to see things in daiyu’s shoes, especially when she was a child

Historical fiction is my favorite, but this was especially gripping. Also, a culture and time period I did not know anything about.

Riveting, though relentlessly tragic.

Beautiful writing, brutal story. Left me thinking.

It was a fairly short book but very interesting. It was also kind of depressing. Certainly a story that can put one’s life into perspective. In that the character goes through so much—and then for what?
