So, I liked this one but I didn’t love it. I feel like the pacing was off and that it could’ve been so much more. Kennedy and Cain had both been through some really traumatic things in their pasts, which did bring them closer together, but it also held them apart. Cain’s unwillingness to communicate at all really drove me insane. The whole thing with the company was kinda flat and & I didn’t love the reveal towards the end regarding Kennedy. It definitely felt like something was missing, but I can’t put my finger on what exactly.

This was another entertaining instalment of the Sutter Lake series. This follows Cain & Kennedy. Kennedy is hiding from her past due to mistakes her father made, and she helped unearth & Cain is closed off, work focused and seriously overprotective because of what happened to his baby sister years ago. They are both trying to navigate their lives with their pasts haunting them, and opening up to each other isn't easy. I enjoyed how their relationship developed, and the suspense element of this book was slightly better than in the others. You can see the progression in Cowles writing as this series goes on, and I know her later series have definitely improved from this first one. 🌶.5
