I love this book so much. I can't find the words to properly convey how much I love it, but it's a lot. A LOT. It's just so great - Rilla is an amazing character and it's so moving to experience WWI with the Blythes, who are one of my all time favourite literary families.

I think this book is one of the ones that made me most emotional for a WW2 setting in a book. I think it was harder seeing the Blythe and Vance children grow over the last few books. I felt more like Susan and Anne in their fear for them.

That being said I also felt myself in Rilla's shoes in her worry, concern for her loved ones, wanting to be seen as making a difference. Her character growth was decent and the book really changes from Anne to the Children. The terms of respect "Mrs Blythe" and "Mrs Doctor Dear" from Gilbert also being "The Doctor" or "Doctor Dear". It was a hard transition letting fully go of her to follow the others. Although I did love when we did get glimpse of her still being Anne.

I did love Dog Monday, he stole my heart in his loyalty. This heart breaks your heart in ways and explains other countries that were drawn into the War and ones that aren't often talked about.

Coming to the end of the journey with the Anne and the Blythes as well of the rest of the characters were hard. My read of the Christmas Stories will come winter.

This one might be my favourite after the first one. It's very different from the rest.
We follow Rilla (Marilla <3) as a teenager. She's the baby, she's vain and she's lonely because everyone around her is so much older. WW1 hits. Her siblings and friends go off to war. Her small town and her country are tense. Finances change, her family is sad and she has to grow up, either she wants it or not. She becomes involved in the community and takes care of a young child she comes upon.
This book had emotion, had community, paranoia, growing up, sweetness, love, and it showed what the women were doing at home during the war, where most young men and boys were sent into the trenches.
It was great, i loved it and i felt very done with the series before this one.

There are some really great characters in this story, though their brilliance is rather lost by one character being mentioned more than the others - Susan. This book might as well be called Susan of Ingleside. I learned lots about WW1 and there is Montgomery's usual optimism/pessimism dialogues and cheeky humour.
