Excellent, entertaining narration of the human and inhuman characters complete with many accents but unfortunately the plot was slow and did not pick up until about 85% through.

I really respect [a:Namina Forna|17999114|Namina Forna|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1687779286p2/17999114.jpg] for creating this entire world that had wonderfully diverse cultural representation among the characters and had a strong female and black lead. The book also includes important social themes that were well written into a YA series. The premise is unique enough to be memorable, however, I felt that the plot was a little too slow, even though novel had all the makings of greatness.

I have heard that Book 2, [b:The Merciless Ones|40126014|The Merciless Ones (The Gilded Ones, #2)|Namina Forna|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1625497409l/40126014._SY75_.jpg|62232195], is better, but I am not excited enough coming out of book 1 to prioritize the next installment over my TBR list.
