I absolutely loved the idea of the plot, but the execution wasn’t great.
I hated how we missed massive chunks of time and kept hopping around in the story, so it all was very surface level. I think the world building was actually there for the most part, but the relationships and connections need much more depth - specifically the little group of blood sisters and the uruni, since those were the ones we were supposed to come to know and love the same Deka does.
The world itself deserved to be explored more, mostly in regards to Deka and how she begins to see how she does or doesn’t fit into the societal beliefs and what is right and wrong. The build of the world and the explanation of the goddesses and the culture was there, but not so much the questioning of it all. Deka seemed to have had all these realizations that we know nothing about until she randomly states them, rather than us being able to see how to comes to these conclusions. I’m so sad about the lack of depth in her character development and all the jumps we seemed to make to get to where we were at the ending with her “purpose” and her feelings towards it, as well as her relationships. Her friends deserved a better look at her development too, especially with her ever growing and changing and her trying to hide things from them while protecting them.
Again, I LOVE the set up, the plot is fabulous, but I really wish we saw more than just the highlights. I crave depth

A nice read, it makes for a good stand alone even though it's in a series.
There are still bits that don't make much sense but overall the world building was good and the characters were great.
I do think our final villain was a little comic booky and unrealistic but that might be a personal choice. I just found the ending sequence weak.

Such a page turner! Full of suspense and surprises without overdoing it in vulnerable moments. The world created felt very cohesive to me, which really makes or breaks fantasy imo.

I really didn't love this one.
There was a lot of gore and violence, described in a lot of detail, including torture, maiming, battle, and off-screen sexual assault of a minor. The emotion and plot devices were hard to believe, and this is coming from a life-long fantasy fan. I almost gave up but then there was a dragon! Which helped me get through to the end of the book.
A++ audiobook narrator, though.
