This book was action-packed and the use of monstrosity as allegory for womanhood was effective. However, the worldbuilding left some to be desired, and I was unimpressed with the character/relationship development.

I loved this book! I thought the magic system was great and it was a well written expression of the horrid parts of a system that is built around oppression. The twist at the end wasn't my favorite ending for the story, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
This is a difficult review to write and I really don’t know what to rate it. I feel like a rating from me would be a disservice to the book because I am torn on HOW to rate it.
I really enjoyed some elements of this book. It gives off “Children of Blood and Bone” vibes as far as the politics and world building but with different themes. I don’t know I just really don’t know how to rate this because (for me) it read very young. I know it’s intended to be YA but I’ve read other YA fantasies that didn’t feel so young if that makes sense. It’s hard for me to get into fantasy as it is and this just wasn’t a book that pulled me in and kept me there. It really dragged at times and I had to force myself to keep reading, and in the end I just don’t think this was the book for me. I know many people have loved it and YOU may end up loving it if you read it. I personally am just not going to continue on in the series.
