Easily one of the most captivating novels I've ever read, and one of the very few I would gladly go through a second time. Granted, the beginning was a bit slow and difficult to grasp, but once I got more of a feel for Toni Morrison's voice, I fell in love. So many special bits reside permanently in my mind even over a year since I finished reading it--the scattered rose petals beneath the man about to jump off the roof of Mercy Hospital; Milkman's dream in which his mother was consumed by enlarged flowers; Pilate's single earring bearing her name; Milkman's revelation regarding his family history while listening to the children's song.

Morrison's powerful take on language and dynamic characters are what make this novel truly unforgettable. Would recommend to anyone seeking a genuine experience that can only be provided by the greatest books out there.

challenging emotional tense medium-paced

This book was incredibly confusing, compelling, heartwrenching, and colorful. I really loved it and each character's plight was so well-planned and intricate. Every word was chosen with care.

Layered, Deep, Intense and Slow

Taking a leap into this was very rewarding near the end, with it’s layered, multi-faceted and many character story.

Was the slowness in the beginning necessary: maybe not.

Was the ending too fast and rushed for my liking: yes

Did this take me waaaay to long to finish: also yes

But I enjoyed it, it was good. I might need to give Beloved another try now that I understand Toni Morisson’s writing style a little better (but that’s going to have to wait for a bit.
