Took until just before part 2 to grab me, but it had a lot to set up.
“What good is a man's life if he can't even choose what to die for?”
Toni Morrison's writing is so beautiful.
Her narrative details is very poetic even though sometimes you think you understand whats happening but really you do not.
She made the book a page turner. You can't stop flipping to the next page to find out whats happening.
I think together with Milkman you are in this journey together with him to find out the family secrets.
I wasn't attached to any of the characters. But I could still feel the attachment of their storyline.
I was frustrated at first that there were gaps and holes in certain character storyline but I think there is a beauty of not knowing and each reader could patch a plotline of what happen.
“You stupid, man. Real stupid. Ain’t no law for no colored man except the one sends him to the chair,” said Guitar.”

Really interesting, you can tell that Morrison is a crazy good writer, I'd totally check out her other books. Lots of magical realism and a large dose of assholes and lewd situations and descriptions, this is the kind of book people get really mad about because they don't understand it :)
I don't even have the words. This is the way writers wish they could write.
Slow start, but boy does this book leave you thinking once you are done.
Toni Morrison's writing is so incredibly beautiful, and it's clear that she knows exactly how to play with words in order to get a point across without having to blatantly write it. Omg I can't wait to read more of her.
First of all that was a very interesting read. I would’ve never picked up this book, but my bestfriend suggested we buddy read this book and lo! This books ticked me off, made me process some things by staring at the wall after reading some of it, my eye twitched at it at times too.
It was a dense read in a way of there’s twists that I didn’t see coming. The social class between the characters was very much apparent. I really like that part because the way she builds on this characters by their experience and where they stand in society was very believable. You empathize with each one, even the “bad” ones. It absolutely doesn’t justify the actions that they take but you see the string of actions and choices they’ve made and you almost think like “yeah, this is what they would do in that situation.”
The twists. Oh man the twists. You thought everything was at end and she really said sike! And pull on some new thread for you to follow. So the end was wrapped like a present with a bloody bow on top. Amazing book.

A book about growing up and finding your people.
Milkman lives in Michigan with his parents, aunt, cousins, and sisters. Their family dynamic is contentious and Milkman doesn't feel he fits in or is understood by anyone but his best friend Guitar. Once a gown man, his rudderless lifestyle continues until he goes on a quest for gold and stumbles into a journey through his family's history.
Toni M is a great writer and their are lines that will really stick with me, but on the whole I thought this book was just OK. The beginning was hard to follow as time seemed to shift quickly and it was unclear who the main character was, but once Milkman goes on his journey to find "his people" it was much more enjoyable. My favorite part, besides the one-liners, was the unveiling of Milkman's world as we see he is really just a child in a grown man's body. His life is relatively easy and carefree but he still thinks his struggles are greater than everyone else's.
It's pretty clear that this book is not really about plot and is capital-L Literature so I think I might enjoy it more after re-reading or having a serious discussion with someone who knows what to look for.
