I vaguely remember reading this as a young teenager and simply devouring it. I wanted to reread it as an adult to reevaluate my opinion.

On the reread, I once again devoured it. It really pulls you through and it's amazing to see what she went through and all the people she met. I will say, the book is long and it's obviously sensationalized/biased, though still a great read.

I’m very interested in Betty’s story, but the way the book was written was very off putting. It’s too slow and the generalizations of Iranians was hard to swallow at times.

I don't remember exactly when I read this, but I do remember that it was one of the first grown-up books I attempted. I am quite sure my mother read it first. It's a story about a marriage gone wrong and inter cultural clashes. This book had quite a substantial influence on my view of marriages between people from different cultures, although this was reinforced by my mother as well. Of course it can work, but I think many fail to realize how deep tradition runs in some socities. Betty paid a high price. I have no idea what I would think of this book now, back then it was a riveting story.

I bought it because it is a real life story but during reading I found myself hoping that it wasn't. Reading and knowing that there are people who are cruel like this, it was just frustrating.
I couldn't take a break from reading this book and I really felt Betty's sufferings and her despair. There were even moments like I couldn't breathe because of her despair. It is just not possible to read it without feeling empathy for her.
It is so bad what people or governments do under the name of religion. And it is also so bad being stuck in a life without your free will. But the worst part , who put you in this condition is the person you love the most.
I just love to read the biographies or autobiographies of women!
But it will be so good if no woman has to fight with the problems of this patriarchal life.
Betty was one of the most powerful mothers I have ever known or read. Her love for her daughter! The things she did for her. She made the impossible, possible!
I feel very happy that she survived and wrote this for us. I wish every women find the courage inside them and can fight like her.
It is a Must Read!

A gripping and intense story that was very hard to put down. I know the book has prompted a lot of criticism on the grounds of portraying a prejudiced and unnecessarily harsh view of Islam, Iranian culture and society and particularly the treatment of women. It was of course published in 1987 so conditions and various aspects of life in Tehran would no doubt have changed since to some extent. I haven't seen the movie or read any of the other spin-offs subsequently released, e.g. the documentary made by Betty Mahmoody's husband Moody to refute her allegations or the book by her daughter Mahtob (both of which would be interesting). Despite the critical reception in some quarters, it was a moving story, demonstrating how a mother's love for her child can compel her to endure unimaginable horrors and dangers.

Haunting story based on true events. I first read this when I was 12 and it made a huge impression on me.
challenging dark tense medium-paced

Wow! Definitely an intense thriller, although there were a few lulls for me. I thought it was an interesting read, but I do wonder if anything was dramatized. Also, I feel like it paints Islam in a bad light (she does make the point to see there were several Muslims who treated her well and gave her a positive influence of the religion). And while I’m sure there are many bad Muslims (like her husband) I think the majority are probably just good people trying to live their religion.
dark sad tense
