This was one of those books that I was compelled to read and I really wanted to enjoy. But as a "new" mum to a daughter, I found it terrifying and I just couldn't get very far through it without it triggering everything I hold dear. What an amazing story but I feel like it could still be written today about various cultures in the world (bloody scary!). Anyway, sorry for the rambling but I guess it wasn't the right time for me to read this and I hope to pick it up again (or watch the movie) when maybe I'm not as sensitive!!
I read this book when it was first published in 1987, and I still think about Betty and her daughter and what they went through. It is written so well you feel like you are there with them, I can’t recommend this highly enough!

Dreadful book on many levels - though I read it in German which may have had some bearing.

We read this for book club, and I wasn't disappointed. It's pretty intense and very eye opening to a life style and culture that I just can't fathom. The movie is good too, but the book, of course, is better.

As I reached the end of the book I realized, to my great dismay, that she seems in a hurry to finish the book! Although unfortunately for the author, the family she got married in was of such bad taste, the book does reflect a few things. The shortcomings of an extremely patriarchal society is in the limelight! Also how extremism in religion and the reluctance to accept the change makes a foreigner's life difficult and those of natives has been beautifully showcased.
Though she seemed to have some bias towards Islamic practices, by the end of the book she more than justified that.
All in all, the book is worth a read. If nothing, you will learn a few things of Iran!

Great book, I was gripped by the story as it unfolded. I had seen the film, and admired her courage then, but after reading the book, I admire her even more.
