This was quite similar to the first book, minus the fact that Rory’s relationship with both Dane and Sam has changed drastically.
Rory is no longer working for Dane, and has, instead, been adopted by him as a little brother. I have to admit it all felt slightly over-the-top, but it was also quite cute. I definitely really like their dynamic and relationship. At first I thought it might turn into something romantic, but it is quite clear now that it won’t. And I’m okay with that, even though it’s a shame.
When it comes to Sam, the change in their relationship is that they basically do not have one anymore. Sam barely even grovelled for his fuck-up in the previous book, and after Rory takes him back, it does not take him long to fuck up again. He then takes freaking months to try to get Rory back, and he does so in a way that exuded entitlement and arrogance. He just assumed Rory would take him back, no questions asked, and unfortunately, it turned out he was right. Rory forgave him, and henceforth began their biting relationship once more in which they mostly just argue and Sam is a bit of an arsehole. I was resigned to the fact that apparently Rory wanted to be in a relationship with a dickhead, and at least, I thought, Sam is all-in now. He does truly adore Rory, so much so, he is basically obsessed. No way is he going to fuck up again, right? WRONG. This book ends with Sam leaving Rory AGAIN. I legit felt like screaming. This man deserves to drown in dirt, he is the absolute worst. And I need Rory to stand his ground from now on and not take him back. Or at least make him reaaaally work for it. Because I am getting so pissed off with this Sam guy. Seriously.

“Promise me you won’t go anywhere,” he said, my face in his hands as he stared into my eyes.
“I promise.” I smiled slowly.
“Don’t leave me. I’ll hurt you if you try and leave me.”
I smiled down into his eyes. “Yeah? You’ll hurt me?”
“Jory,” his voice cracked. “Please, baby, I—”
But my mouth on his cut him off as I kissed the worry right out of him.

Anyway, aside from Dane and Sam, we also see Rory interact with plenty of other people and, just like the previous book, I adored most of these scenes. Rory was so well-loved; it was very pleasant and engaging to read about him meeting all these people that instantly adored him.

The plot itself is still pretty insane, and although I genuinely do like Rory, I have to admit that it is utterly ridiculous how he treats all the many threats to his life. He genuinely does not seem to take it seriously in any way, and I don’t understand why, since he most certainly does not have a death wish, and it’s not like he’s stupid… So why?

a run-down of my initial thoughts after having spent the day finishing the first 2 books

I read someone's review before - "Why does everyone love Jory so much?" - I don't know whether I would have noticed otherwise, but I can see the point being made. It's as if every gay guy has a thing for him in the book and yet I couldn't really imagine him in his role. I mean he's described as blond, brown eyes, 23 (now) and looking like a Abercrombie & Fitch model - okay... sure... I was much more interested in Dane (and I kept on hoping there'd be more there)

What annoys me about this book - "you'll never expect who kidnaps him" or whatever else is written in the description... REALLY?

I mean you have to be pretty frickin' blind not to see it coming (like really really dense)
I kept on wondering since they said it's from an unexpected corner you know maybe it'd be ... idk... unexpected?
That expectation put on the book - and then taking the obvious choice of bad guy? Come on!

And then there's Sam... God, I don't like him. At first I though - those two= cute. Why not? But seriously:

SpoilerFirst the whole BS in the car in Book 1 over how it's just a fling anyway - I mean dude! come on! you don't joke about stuff like that
Again I hoped Jory and Dane would somehow magically end up together - silly me
Jory kind of pissed me off by taking him back so quickly - how quickly his resolve falters
Then Mary - first he ditches Jory at the party (he brought him to) - flirts with a girl in front of him and then doesn't even deflect Jory's accusation that he and Mary have something he needs to explore
Faceplant -.-
After dumping his ass - I'm thinking good for you - but of course... he takes him back (there's pattern as I'm sure you guys have noticed as well: break-up due to terrible thing & make-up in like 5 sec flat)
Then the ending... Thank F*ing God there's a sequel- and I'm going to read it specifically because I want Jory to MOVE the fuck ON! Away from Sam and into Dane's arms (okay, that's what I want - but please not Sam the dude's really getting on my nerves)

What I found cute though - Him Playing Love-God (Jory) - at least there was one funny thing

Somehow I started off rating this book 3 stars - but as I wrote this review and what I didn't like it's moved down to 2 stars.

Honestly, I think the series are worth reading and I do recommend them - but be prepared to be in the for the long haul because honestly the only reason I'm now continuing reading is keeping my fingers crossed and hoping Jory becomes smarter (well, he's kinda smart - but you know, sticks with the decisions he makes like - Idk - when ending a relationship staying that way?) & More Dane *sigh* I might be completely delusional but the chemistry is there and even though they're technically brothers now (on paper - of course) I'm still hoping.

I agree with other reviewers who said this should have been one long book because it is cut into horrible little volumes.

Now be honest.....before Dane "adopted" Jory we all kinda wanted him to switch teams and declare his undying love because OMG he is so much better for Jory than Sam is. I mean I get that you can't pick who you love but I am seriously sick of Sam's bullshit and I am a bit annoyed with their whole relationship. Can I say how much I love Dylan though? I love that J is her work-husband and generally how cool her real husband is with their relationship.

But yeah.... I am so on team Dean.

Urgh. Yesterday, after finishing Frog and Acrobats, I decided I unmistakably loved Mary Calmes' writing. Today, after the first two books of the Matter of Time series, I'm not so sure.

I was expecting something sweet and a bit wholesome with still the thrill of a good mystery/he prottecs romance and was just disappointed to find a rushed narrative and the constant push and pull of the two main characters. They are exhausting. Really. I loved Jory at the beginning (I actually really love the story at the beginning but the insta-love and the absurdities killed it for me), because he was so easy going and refreshing... But the kid is so damn illogical and absurd I wanted to smack him in the face to give him some clarity.

And Sam... Jesus Christophe. I don't understand the appeal. Like, really, he is infuriatingly hotheadish, but turns into a nice puppy whenever Jory is around? He doesn't make any sense!! I wanted to feed him some uncooked veal at times. Still want to.

I want to know how it ends but reading this is painful. Jesus. I'm a mess. Also, Dane. Dane saved the whole thing for me. Gotta love Dane. He's wonderful and sweet and I LOVE HIM.

Was it good? Meh.
Would I re-read it? Nope.
Would I marry Dane? Yes.
Do I still love Mary Calmes? Damn yes, this was published ten years ago and some gems where created from her hands, I'll just have to tread carefully in her territory.
Is it okay to read at night, when insomnia keeps you up? Yup. Not scary. You can mostly put it down whenever.

Call me the Grinch, but I'm starting to feel like this is a series people adore only because they read it (for the first time, anyway) when they were new to the genre and just excited to read any m/m no matter what fuckery was happening on the page. The writing isn't great, their isn't a plot 'arc' so much as what it would look like if you plotted the path of a pinball in one of of those old school arcade games, and the characters take turns being annoying as fuuuuuuck.

*big, grumpy sigh*

But I'm in it now.

FML.

there was all this build up about the kidnapping and coming down to the end, I really wasn't that surprised. I wanted it to be someone different from who I guessed, but alas, not that much suspense to be had. Still okay though.

Alright, I'm in tears.
What the hell Sam???? I really don't get him.
HE keeps coming into Js life, DEMANDING everything from him, and then leaves out of nowhere? Being a damn coward????
Wow I know they have a HEA, but damn I really wished that J would find someone else, Sam is a coward.

》“I love you, baby.”
But he didn’t. Not really.
How could he leave me if he loved me?《

The first book was great, this one was okay, but you kinda get super annoyed with some of these characters. I'm glad Sam got his shit together with coming out to his family and ready to be with Jory after being so miserable without him, but he screws it up at the end and leaves him. At this point, I'm kinda done with shipping Jory and Sam. It's like lets get back together, let's break us, lets get back together. I can't stand it! Ugh! It's obvious they'll probably get back together in the end, but Jory, please make Sam work for it.
