I really liked this. It was a good story with interesting characters and plenty of excitement. Littttle heavy on the angst for my taste... I can do some angst if I'm in the mood, I just wasn't sure it matched the vibe of the story. But overall it's a really good duology and an exciting story.

The sequel was said to be better than the first and...I guess it is? In the way that strangers have better conversations the more often they meet. The dialog is a lot smoother and less forced, there's no more set up so we can go straight into the action, but it doesn't feel...real? It feels like a group playing a video game, 'Why are we going there?' 'Cause that's where the plot is happening.' Also the best characters in the book...are not the main characters. In fact, the main characters feel bland and too broody for no reason. Really, they just need to get over themselves and focus on the task at hand. This series also suffers from a weird cultural gap that, if you don't understand some Middle Eastern terminology, you'll struggle to understand the significance of things. Which is weird because...the plot doesn't really lean into that significance. Or at least, it doesn't need it to tell the story.

It's always weird and shocking when I don't like the first book, but end up really liking the second one. This one had everything the first one lacked which makes sense because no more world building, just plot.

I overall liked the book but I had a hard time getting started with it. I really like the found family and the strength in the bonds they created.
