A huntress, an assassin, a warrior, and a general... continuing their journey in defeating the Lion of the Night. Picking up where the last book left off, Altair is still being held captive but Zafira, Nasir, and Kifah are heading towards the Sultan’s keep to finish the plan Altair had set in motion before finally going to rescue him. They must restore the hearts of the Sisters ofOld and finally return magic to Arawiya. Too bad they are low on resources, allies, and Zafira is battling with the darkness from the bond between her and the newly acquired Jawarat... constantly pushing her to the edge of chaos that she could unleash. Not to complicate things further but the feelings between Nasir and Zafira are also getting more complicated.. with both of them falling in love with the other but Nasir not being able to voice his emotions and Zafira fearing that she might become a monster and that she is not worthy of being his partner. Altogether we have a complicated rescue mission, emotional damages, and oh look at that more people have joined the mission to further complicate feelings. This was a beautiful ending to the story and adventure. I loved the characters and the emotional depths they all had. Altair ( my sweet boy) really went through it in this book and someone just needs to hug him. Nasir and Zafira’s feelings for one another were sweet and at times you'd want to shake one of them and just tell them to just communicate with the other one and voice their feelings, it would save them a lot of misunderstanding and heart ache. Zifah really remains a QUEEN. Overall, this was a gorgeous series and I had a great time reading it.

FR: Avec spoilers!

J’ai lu cette partie avec une playlist Spotify appelée "we hunt the flame/we free the stars: zafira and nasir" par mariam !! et ça m’a vraiment aidée à m’immerger.

ENG (I read the book in French):

This book is a beautiful ending to this beautiful duology. It was so close to being a 5-star, but, like the first book, it was just too long. I think it could have been 100-150 pages shorter and then it would have been perfect.

The beginning:
I didn't think this was slow at first, but when I realized that everything was basically pointless because Altaïr wouldn't come back and Aya just had to become evil, I thought it could have gone faster and the first +/- 280 pages felt like a bit of a waste. Of course the big thing with the heart being placed in the Lion happened soon after, which was what the first part was actually leading up to, but it could have been done quicker.

The Middle:
This for me is from the beginning of the second part. At this point I already found this book to be long, and sometimes I was dragging a bit to read it. However, I think it got a lot better after this because the Lion finally got into action. I started reading with a Spotify playlist called "we hunt the flame/we free the stars: zafira and nasir" by mariam !! and it helped a lot to get me immersed. But I also think the plot kinda picked up from here, similarly to the first book.

The end:
I start this from page 478, because I read from there until the end in one day. The ending part was phenomenal for me (especially the last 100 pages). It was emotional and the plot was very active. I would totally give this part 5 stars and this is the reason this book got the high score of 4.75/5. I think this was a great ending to the duology as well and I would not have changed anything (except for letting Misk survive).

The Romance:
This strong subplot of romance throughout the two books really brought so much to the books. Honestly, I think this is one of the best romances I've read (in fantasy). The characters were flawed and real and their romance wasn't easy, but you could feel the chemistry radiating off the pages. Furthermore, the writing surrounding their romance was amazing (it was great throughout the whole book). The part where the romance really shone was in the second half of this book, but it was great the whole time.

One last negative point:
I think this book had a bit of unnecessary cruelty. I understand that the stakes have to be raised, but I got a bit uncomfortable reading about Altaïr losing his eye. I also felt so bad for Yasmine who already lost everybody and then also her husband, Misk. This especially I found unnecessary, the stakes were already high at this point. We also barely got to know Yasmine and Misk (despite Yasmine being Zafira's best friend she is barely present). And that made this death feel even more pointless because while I do feel bad for Yasmine I don't really have that emotional connection that I had with, for example, Benyamin in the first book... In my opinion the author only added it for shock factor and because people react more to books where they feel strong emotions (even if those are negative).

In conclusion I think this was a strong duology, but the author should shorten the start of her books more and get to the actual plot in a more timely manner. I still would recommend these 2 books.
