I liked this more than the first book, but the end ruined it a little.
I fell in love with the characters and the dynamic of the zumra, so I was more hooked from the start. But the ending felt a bit rushed. Thebattle with the Lion happened so quickly for all that built up. It dragged for chapters as an impossible mission and then ended in minutes. It was all to have magic again and we read almost nothing about the world after it.
I wish theconfrontation between Yasmine and Altair happened , it was another thing that the writer made me expect would happen dramatically and then didn’t. And I would’ve liked to see more of Nasir and Zafira. The last chapters truly left a bittersweet taste.
Still, I liked the writing style and found the story interesting. (Altair best character! I can’t believe he’s my favorite when I wanted him gone for a big part of the first book)

Found family, "oh when is a monster not a monster?", clawing magic back into the world through blood/sweat/tears, 'death?? who is she' type survival sequences, and an enchanting vibrant world -- this duology had it all, and capped off with an epic ending in "We Free the Stars". It was amusing how magic almost seemed secondary in a story full of politics and trying to figure out who to trust among your allies, with an ever shifting cast of characters that had me hoping constantly that my faves would pull through as morally leaning good. The main characters' self-doubts almost being their undoing at times definitely made me want to violently shake them into common sense. I liked that things weren't always easy & buttoned up nicely for the main crew - plans went awry, most people didn't get what they expected, and grief was sprinkled throughout for things that could've been - but they still stuck together. The family you choose and all that. I didn't want the story to end!

hafsah faizal's writing it's so sensitive and beautiful it had me crying in almost every chapter.
My expectations have risen higher than before. Not complaining tho. This duology was amazing. When you compare the characters at the start of We Hunt the Flame and the end of We Free the Stars.. you'll see a huge development. One of the most admirable things of the Zumra is that they made decisions for the better of Arawiya with following their own morals/values. I would have to say that I enjoyed the second book more because for me it made the first one make more sense and it had more from each character.
This was such a great ending to this duology Hafsah Faizal does such an amazing job of bringing this story together and has become one of my favourite authors.
This book is full of twists and turns and the plot progresses at the perfect pace not too fast or slow. The writing really brings the story to life and there is so much culture in this that adds so much to the story. I loved the characters even more in this and each of their story arcs are so well done. Hasfah also gives us the angsty romance we all love.
Overall, I gave this 4.5 stars.
Trigger warnings for abuse, loss of a loved one, torture and blood Magic.
