Another good entry in the series. I ended up reading it very quickly as it kept my interest throughout. The book was published in 2008 but it was interesting to see how the same societal issues are happening at an even worse rate now. A fanatical "evangelical" politician stoking the flames of xenophonbia/homophobia/religious persecution... a lot of parallels if you ask me.
Reread number ... ???
I've read this book, and many of Kathy Reich's books so many times. I would highly recommend this book and the whole series. Always a go to for me.
This time I enjoyed it as an audiobook while cooking dinner for the family this week.

If this was the first Reichs book I read, I don't know that I'd read any more. Nothing about it was memorable or unique enough to set it apart from other mystery books. There was a bit less of the smart/stupid Brennan than the last book, less of textbook explanation of various sciences, fewer rhetorical questions, but still too many for me. The other annoying bit about the writing was the "telling" not "showing" of action and emotion. The only example that comes to mind at the moment is "radiated like heat" -- why include the last two words when radiated already implies the heat? And all the telling regarding Tempe's emotions with Andrew Ryan. Made for boring scenes between them. Stop with the recollection of what happened and keep the action in the present! Even the "climactic ending" when, shocker, Tempe is kidnapped and 'almost' dies but Ryan bursts in at the exact right moment -- gee, didn't see that coming.
If the library had more good books on CD, I wouldn't be compelled to read this formulaic stuff.

A little convoluted, but I always enjoy my time with Temperance and the gang.

I read this as a handheld a while back, but when I started listening to it this time around, I couldn't remember everything. And I like Kathy Reichs, so gave it another go. And I'm glad I did. I liked it more this time. Maybe because someone was telling me the story or a different frame of mind.
It's a busy story, several tendrils of tale going on to keep up with. It used to bother me when Reich's would add in all of the in-the-weeds forensic details, but I've grown to like that. I like learning as much as I like the mystery and the characters, settings, and story.
Brennan has many things going against her to add to the suspense. The men in her life are all coming up with surprises, the prejudice against anything not considered the norm, working against time to keep more deaths from happening.
It's been a while since listening or reading from this series and this was a good reminder to get back to it. I've missed my time with Brennan, Ryan, Slidell, and the rest.
Definite recommend.

Very detailed and technical, but I expected nothing less. I read this in one sitting, then went back and read the last few chapters again just to make sure I understood.
This is a fantastically paced, technical mystery that I enjoyed, even if I didn't understand it all at first. Definitely skip the glass of wine on this one.

It was a fun read, but not as good as the other books in the series. Also, Americans like to live in fear--but I knew that already.
