dark tense fast-paced

Another great book by Kathy Reichs. The plot of the story in this book takes place in Charlotte in North Caroline and there are only mentionings of Canada, none of the scenes take place there. While reading this one I noticed that the main character at times while narrating talks directly to the readers, either it's the novelty or I simply didn't noticed it before but I like that. The book was very interesting, it covered a wide variety of topics homicide, religion, addictions etc. Well written story with a lot of details.

I've been having issues reading lately so I decided to revert back to one of my favorite authors, Kathy Reichs. I believe I've mentioned before how I work in the medical field and enjoy books in the genre of mystery and crime. One of the many reasons I truly enjoy Kathy Reichs is her attention to detail. Her use of the surroundings and their history, and the educational graphics concerning Temperance's cases.

In Devil Bones, Dr. Brennan is in North Carolina for the "season". I haven't quite followed Dr. Brennan's rotation of Canada and North Carolina but I do enjoy the different scenes. A house under renovation has a grisly secret, bones in a cauldron along with other religious symbols. Later a headless body is discovered on the side of a lake. A radical preaching politician and a prying paparazzo lead Temperance down the road of Santeria, voodoo, and Satanism. Now she must find a killer before they strike again.

The story was a rollercoaster with a very emotional twist. Though I would have hoped for more emotional interaction, I found that Temperance was human. Reichs conveyed her as very open-minded as she studied up on the various religions. Her hesitancy before starting a new relationship was also much appreciated.

However, there were some issues. Her lack of "dealing with" her previous suitor, or even her potentially new one. Reichs wrote more about the science, which was informational, but there was a lack of a love interest from Brennan. I also noticed that each male in her life is roughly the same. Each seems to understand her little quips and even has an "inside" joke with her. There's also some kind of love tragedy in their past.

While it would have been nice to have more emotion from the book, I cannot say it took anything away from the overall plot. If you want some history, science, and mystery then you should definitely read Kathy Reichs.

Good book

Such a great book! I loved reading it, and the mystery was so great! And the commissioner guy, he was so awful! Can't wait to read (and reread one) more!

Enjoyed listening to this one much better than others because I finally figured out I do not like Barbara Rosenblat's reading style. She portrays Tempe as humorless and stiff and that was turning me off to the series. Hopefully Linda Emond narrates the rest of the series! Story pretty good too but I thought it kind of went off in a few too many tangents.

I have been following this series of books for many years now and have always enjoyed every reading experience. Recently I have revisited them again as my daughter wanted me to buddy read them with her after discovering the television series and then seeing the books in our bookshelves. Even though I explained that the books and TV show are two different entities, she was still determined to read them. So here I am, many books later and enjoying them just as much as I did the first time. I am glad I read the books before seeing some of the television show because otherwise I may not have liked them quite so much. Temperance is depicted differently on the show than in the books. Although there are tie-ins of course. I don’t want to go into too much detail about it because I don’t want to spoil them for you.
Temperance Brennan is a bit of a quirky character- she’s quite complex, highly intelligent, a little damaged, but incredibly good at what she does. She’s a forensic anthropologist who is called upon to help in the trickiest of investigations. Through this series we get to tag along as she works, following her through the investigations, mysteries, and intriguing situations.
Each book is a great read in its own right, but as a series they help to develop a bigger and more intricate picture- giving greater insights into the character/s and backstory.
I recommend this series, it’s definitely worth the read. But keep a bit of an open mind if you’re a fan of the TV show- it’s not quite the same.

Happy reading!

Plumbing upgrades in an old house reveal a skull and cauldrons, prompting media attention as evidence of "devil worship". A body shows up with a pentagram carved in the chest. A local councilor launches a media platform of invective, railing against pagan religions as all being Satanic in nature.

Well researched and respectful of Santeria and Wicca, an excellent read, as always.

Love this series by Kathy Reichs. She does not disappoint!

I always enjoy reading Kathy Reichs books. They are very entertaining and well researched - a nice break from the scientific reading I have to do for my job.
