Brennan and her United States sidekick, Detective Slidell, get called to a shrine in a basement and find a dead chicken, a head sans body, and some other indicators that a ritual has taken place. After sifting through a couple of cauldrons of dirt some more markers of ritual and sacrifice surface and when a body washes up on shore engraved with satanic symbols concern rises. Tracking down the body to match the head and uncover which religion is holding what ritual and why leads Brennan and Slidell deep into the world of religion. As it so often seems, not everything is as it appears to be.
I liked this one. Reichs does a deep dive into voodoo, devil worship, Wicca, Santería, and a few other religions I can't pronounce nor remember. Her deep dive introduced a few things to this evangelical-raised girl and corrected a few fallacies I have had about some or all of the ones mentioned. Reichs Brennan of the books is very different than the Brennan of the TV show, I'm warming to her but I'm still pretty smitten with the quirky Brennan on TV.

I watch the TV show Bones and this book is very different. I liked the forensic details. I enjoyed it more as the pace got quicker. The attempt to express a message at the end was very clumsy.

This book almost got 2 stars. If I hadn't read the earlier books and didn't already like the series I probably would've put this book down and never finished it. That being said it took almost 150 pages for the book to finally become interesting. Too many names floating around and after all the times I put the book down and picked it up I had forgotten who most of them were and took a little while to put the pieces back together. The interesting portion of the book definitely made up for the boring parts but this could've been a lot better overall.
I really enjoyed this book on CD. However, I found it so interesting that I want to read the book now!
I was really digging this book at first, but the treatment of Wicca disturbed me. As an anthropologist Tempe should've been more accepting of the Wiccan aspects of her case/suspects/friends, but she was constantly suspicious and distrusting, though she was fine with Santaria and VooDoo. It felt off and as though Kathy Reichs forced her normally tolerant character into this role only to further the plot.

Typical Tempe Brennan book. Plenty on her inner life and relationships. Gory crimes, tense plot development and gruff cops.

Another Bones in the bag!! This one was a fun examination of “fringe” religions, sexuality, and religious bigots. All too topical, over a decade after it was published.
