This book of the classic bedtime stories that my parents never read to me makes some of the references in the film Thor easier to understand. Also, while I rooted for Loki in the film, he's quite a character in Norse mythology. The hand-drawn pictures make the incredible feats the Norse gods perform much more plausible. My favourite story? The one where Loki turns into a mare.......

So much fun! The kids are much more familiar with Greek and even Roman myths, so it was interesting to look at the Norse take on things. Thank heavens for the pronunciation guide at the end!

Myths are always fun and informative. A few are actually good stories while the rest seem perpetuate sexism and violence...but these stories can be used to talk about the hows and whys of back then as well as what's similar and different today. They're all ways to talk about the world and get discussion going, especially with my son.

The d'Aulaires are great story tellers. I think they weave the stories together very well and they don't shy away from the not-so-great parts of the myths. The illustrations aren't my favorite but the still add to the stories.

This is the book that shifted me from Greek mythology to Norse. I was probably about 10 or 12 at the time.

Illustrated in what might be pencil crayon (which, to the 10-year-old me, implied that I or my friends could draw something similar), this collection of Norse myths showed me the wonder and the tragedy at the heart of mythology.

Really excellent in ever way. Would be a good gift! So would E. Nesbit's Shakespeare Retold for kids! Since I assume everyone is thinking of what gifts to buy me.

I liked reading the myths. The illustrations were a bit wonky, though. I probably could have done a better job.

Also: Loki, you're such an awkward person...still my favorite though. And how can anyone not like Thor?

It might not be a fair comparison, but while I was reading it, I couldn't stop thinking about how much I preferred the Greek myths book.

One of my favorite books as a child was D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. I adored the illustrations and the awesome stories of times long ago. I didn't encounter this volume of myth interpretations until I was an adult, after I had already read the Eddas on which these tales are based. The illustrations are just as stunning as those in the collection of Greek myths - as I was reading this book at work, everyone stopped by to look over my shoulder. This book is a treasure for children and a must-have for any children's library. It gives a the reader a fantastical journey into the nine worlds of the ancient Norse, providing readers with a background in a mythology that has greatly influenced literature and other media over the ages.
