Not as good as the first but still featuring all the characters we love along. Whereas book 1 was very character heavy, this one focused more on plot. But i felt the love between these two shine brightly even as they faced something dark and terrible.

Also I’m so excited for book 3!

Holy shit that prologue was intense. I teared up! The story was pleasantly lighthearted without much angst, at least for us as the readers lol. I appreciate that lack of angst. It has a pretty simple plot, but still pretty good.

I thought this book was driven by the characters just as much as the plot. I love Brishen and Ildiko but I was unsure whether I would still be invested in their story given they are happy and together. I though Draven added a good level of angst for them which was believable and kept me invested in their relationship. I would love to get Anhuset and Serovek's POVs, I really hope their storyline develops more in the next book. Also, Kirgipa's chapters were my favourite, I was sad they fell by the wayside as the book went on - I need to know what is going to happen with her and Necos!

I enjoyed the overall plot, but in general the writing didn't go into much detail, meaning moments of peril and turmoil were wrapped up fairly quickly e.g. Brishen's quest. I thought the part with the elders vs the galla during the river crossing was so emotional and fantastically written. I just wish Draven had put that much emotion and effort into the whole book. The ending was all tied up too cleanly and too quickly - it's unclear what the next book will be about.

Overall I still enjoyed it, as I love Brishen and Ildiko as characters. As mentioned I would like more POVs from the other characters to add a bit more variety. I will definitely read the next book.

I did like this, though not as much as the first one. The miscommunications between Brishen and Ildiko was annoying because of how well they usually communicate. A bit more plot than the first book, but I missed Brishen & Ildiko being together for most of it. Also the (complete) climax seemed a bit off the page which I found… odd. Despite these issues I still enjoyed it, and perhaps much of the above was discovering characters under pressure. Ildiko remains so poised and capable, I love her as an ordinary woman whose inner strength is extraordinary.

I enjoyed this book, but it wasn't nearly as strong as book 1. The main issues here are two fold: first, the thing that was so good about book one was the relationship, and it was a stronger book because it knew that and kept the focus there. In contrast this book is trying, it seems, to set up a lot of things within the world for the remainder of the series, and to that end it focuses very heavily on the fantasy plot going on, which I just don't find all that compelling. Secondly, and more importantly, all of the tension is zapped out of the romantic relationship because the addition of a third point of view in this book provides the reader with information very early on (like literally within the first few pages of the book) that resolves the internal conflict that is motivating the romance throughout the remainder of the novel. Brishen and Ildiko remain excellent characters and their relationship is still wonderful; however, that just wasn’t enough to carry the book this time around. I will be continuing the series (mostly because I love the characters), but this was definitely a bit of a letdown.
