I’ve been wanting to read this book for years and finally got around to it!!!
Mary Jane is hired as a summer nanny for the Cone family; which consists of Dr.Cone, Mrs Cone and little (outrageously cute) toddler Izzy. Mary Jane comes from a traditional family; her mother is a housewife, they go to church on Sundays and they have a photo of President Ford hanging in their living room that they bless during dinnertime .
MJ expects the Cone house to be the same, but quickly learns that not everyone lives the way that her family does. They walk around the house nude, there’s buddha statues on the windowsill, they eat takeout for dinner every night. She doesn’t understand how a doctor’s family can be like this, but she doesn’t mind it. She actually grows to love it.
The best part? Dr Cone has a new patient coming to live with them, Sheba and Jimmy. Two extremely famous NYC celebs (an actor and singer) are coming to Baltimore to hide out, as Jimmy receives treatment by Dr.Cone for his heroin addiction.
Despite being starstruck at first, Mary Jane soon realizes that they’re normal people just like her. Not only that, but they’re more accepting and loving than her own family. They all spend the summer together; singing, cooking, going to the beach and becoming one big happy family.
Along the way, Mary Jane has to lie to her mom in order for her to be allowed to continue working, knowing that her own parents would never approve of the Cones’ lax way of life. The Summer fun has to end at some point, and it all comes crumbling down at the same time.
I audibly laughed at some parts. This book was FUNNY!! Some favorites:
“Also she called jimmy a fuck. I couldn’t imagine calling another human, or even a dog, a fuck.”
“I soon figured out he was Little Hank because another guy helping us was Medium Hank. I didn’t ask where Big Hank was; maybe it was his day off?”
I shed a tear when the Cones invited Mary Jane to the beach house, calling her a part of their family now, too. She felt love for the first time in the home of strangers, a feeling she never felt from her own parents. a feeling of belonging and affection.
I also shed a tear when MJ listens to the song in the end. The ending was so cute and sweet. I loved this book so much.

This was so good! I didn't think I would enjoy this as much as I did. It gripped me from the start. I read it in two days. Devoured it. 14 year old mary Jane in 1975 is a sheltered child by her strict mother. Her mother teaches her to cook, be a good housewife, goes to church and sings in the choir. A local doctor asks her to nanny for their daughter one summer. The inside of this house is completely different than anything Mary Jane had seen before. It was clutter on every surface, no one cooked, and they lived day to day like 1975 hippies. Mary Jane had to lie to her mom so she could stay working at this job. She fell in love with everyone in the house and opened her eyes to what she wants in life and what kind of person she wants to be. A story about mothers, daughters, race in the 70's, sex, drugs and rock n roll. It was wholesome and engaging. I loved every character in this book. (maybe not Mary Janes parents). Great book!

Loved this book, couldn’t put it down.
An amazing story, it was loveable and touched upon some difficult topics, while being carried by a really interesting and sweet narrator.
I would definitely read again (and would love for it to be turned into a film).

I loved it. Quirky coming of age story set in 1975.
