Another installment in the creative, inventive, witty and illogical Thursday Next series. This one is 14 years later, and Thursday is a bit older and wiser. Some of my favorite characters were in the book, but I would've loved to see more of them - Landon & Mr. Bradshaw for example. Friday and Tuesday were wonderfully developed characters, and I truly enjoyed seeing them outsmart their mother. Fforde adds some new twists to the Bookworld this time, and sadly, does away with the Chronoguard. The ending clearly indicates at least one more Thursday Next book - this book ends about two chapters before the end, with the last two chapters really being the start for the next book... looking forward to it.
A jump forward in time for Thursday doesn’t make the series any less interesting. While this book got off to a slower to start that the first 4, it ended with a bang.

Hilarious and clever as usual, First Among Sequels brings us back into Thursday's life 14 years after Something Rotten. The Outland is dealing with a Stupidity Surplus brought on by a commonsense government and also with ever-shortening attention spans that are affecting Read Rates in BookWorld. Friday, now 16, is three years past when he was "supposed" to join the ChronoGuard. Spec-Ops shut down most of its divisions in the 1990s, and Thursday runs a carpet store that is a cover for underground Spec-Ops work and even more underground Jurisfiction work.
Among the obstacles Thursday faces in BookWorld in First Among Sequels, Sherlock Holmes has been murdered; Racy Novels is threatening to use a smut bomb against Ecclesiastical and Feminist literature; and she is being forced to serve as mentor to two fictional versions of herself, Thursday1-4--from the first 4 books of her series--and Thursday5, from the lost Great Samuel Pepys Fiasco. The first four novels are full of gratuitous sex & violence, and that version of Thursday is a leather-clad nuisance. Thursday herself helped shape Thursday5, a crunchygranola peace lover who wears natural fibers, does yoga, and tries to hug everyone.

Still clever as anything. Definitely one of my favorite series.
I didn't finish this one. I got as far as page 169 and asked myself if I cared how it ended and I didn't.
I don't know if it's Fforde, or me, but I can't seem to get away with his books lately. Maybe I'm tired of the central gag, or there's only so much interest to be wrung from the concept, but either way, I'm done with Fforde for now.

Yet another good Thursday Next book... but, I don't know, there was a little something missing.
Small touches like the source of the quotes at the beginning of each chapter not being there... I know it sounds silly, but I like Jasper Ffordes attention to detail with stuff like that.
Still a good book none the less!

Good, but I thought this would be be the last one so I approached it in the wrongest possible way. Also, confusing.
About a 3.5+/5. Very interesting. My first Jasper Fforde or Thursday Next, and I'll read all the others now.
