I wanted to like this book. It was slow in places but at least interesting. I didn't really care for the leads. Nothing about them or their relationship grabbed me. They were just there. The smut was subpar. It wasn't tantalizing or alluring. I felt nothing when I listened to it. It just felt empty. No heat. No build up. It felt so routine. The part that most turned me off was the ending. She gets found out by some government types and to save her lover she sacrifices herself and agrees to work for them. She makes this decision but refuses to talk about it with him. So of course he will think she either abandoned him or was kidnapped or something. It all adds up to forced conflict. The author couldn't think of a legitimate idea to break them up and lead into the next book so she threw that out. I immediately deleted all of her other books from to want to read list.
I did not like this book. I didn't like the characters or their dynamics.

In my twenties, when I was reading almost exclusively vampire and vampire-adjacent PNR, I probably would have devoured this book. As it is in my forties, I had a lot of trouble finishing it.
What little plot there is to speak of is not particularly engaging. The ending felt more like a bated breath than a conclusion. There was no world building or focus on setting, to the point that it almost felt like the main characters were wandering around and interacting in empty space. Cat is woefully dumb in places, such as when she accepted a drink made by a stranger, started to feel off, didn't even consider she'd been roofied. While I appreciated how refreshingly into consent Bones is—that's *sexy*—I did not appreciate watching him threaten to violently kill anyone who touched Cat now or hurt her previously—that's *not* sexy. I also really didn't like how Bones talks—he doesn't come off British to me so much as an American, who's only been exposed to British speech via American media containing British characters, trying very hard to sound British. In fact, I'd wager this whole series was heavily inspired by Buffy the Vampire Slayer—specifically Spike/Buffy's relationship.
The whole thing was just a swing and a miss for me, which sucks, because it's been on my to-read list forever, and I really, really wanted to like it. The best I can say is: it was fine? Perfectly serviceable for fans of PNR but nothing special. I might try one more in this series, but not for a while.

Oh my! Where was the book when I was going through my Twilight phase. Probably a good thing I never found it back then. Edward Cullen could never match up to Bones and Cat could never ever compete with Bella even in the final book.
Cat is so witty and smart but she has also been rejected and doesn't know her worth. Being a half-vampire she knows how to kill but one night she tussles with the wrong one, an older one and they make a deal.
I listened to the audiobook so hearing Bones was a little different. The cockney accent kinda threw me for a loop but I enjoyed it after awhile. I love how their relationship progresses it was kind of like an enemies-friends-lovers relationship.
Bones is probably one of those ideal swoonworthy book boyfriends and he is definitely in my top ten now! The way he never ever held Cat back and always pushed her to be her best was amazing 😍!

The story was decent but I was finding myself annoyed with the FMC. Then, at 49% or so, the MMC decides to announce he loves the FMC and it didn’t work for me. Why? I’m all for insta love/lust, but in this book it didn’t make sense. Also I have so many books in my TBR.
