This was a book assigned to me in one of my final management courses of my college career. The purpose of this class was to learn how to become conscious leaders and become more connected with ourselves as we learned a new way of thinking/seeing the world. I honestly didn't know what to expect when reading this book, but found myself enjoying it. It honestly was one of the best assigned readings I have ever had and the examples throughout each chapter/commitment really helped you to understand the lessons behind each one. This book only played a part in helping me shift my mindset from below-the-line to above-the-line throughout this semester, but I highly recommend this as a starting point for anyone willing to take a moment and read about a new way of thinking. This book really is helpful if you allow it to be and you don't have to be a leader to learn from it!

I am a big a fan of this book of this book. The premise is an accurate one - today’s leaders are running off adrenaline, anxiety and caffeine. This isn't healthy long term for either individual leaders or organizations. This environment is driven by leaders who are living ‘unconsciously’. A world of stories, believes and fears run rampant in their minds, which leaders treat as ‘facts’ when they interact with the world. The solution offered from the authors is radical - a mindset shift to being a conscious leader.

The authors break down this change in mindset to 15 commitments with a chapter on each. These commitments are written in a way that is easily digestible, through a clear and concise writing style and good examples. While there isn’t a set order to the 15 commitments, there is a vague structure. The first two commitments (responsibility & curiousity) underpin the rest. I also found the later commitments build on each other which was a nice touch from the author. There is also some fascinating and challenging commitments that I loved reading about. The authors chapters on ‘zone of excellence’, ‘having enough’ and ‘play and rest’ were all informative and inspiring.

My criticisms are: some commitments seemed less important than others, due to weak explanations. The book is also highly focused on the ‘mindset’ and lacks clear ‘actions’ for all commitments. At times it felt more philosophical than practical.

Overall though a fantastic read for anyone interested in leadership in the 21st century.
