Boy Like Me

Simon James Green

4.53 AVERAGE

Simon James Green, I am so grateful you wrote this book, although it makes me so sad that you had to. To you readers out there, you NEED to read this book. It made me laugh and cry a lot, and it is a story that needs to be told and heard until all the bigots have been silenced. This is brilliant, as is everything I have read of this author so far. 10/5 stars.

Loved this book so much. Despite growing up on the other side of the world in Perth, Western Australia, there's so much I could relate to. Small town mentality, closed minded bigotry. Sad to think that same old bigotry is being rehashed again for the next minority, 30 years later!!

Lovely and timely book about book bans, old fashioned arguments repeating over and over again. And very gay

When Jamie discovers a book about two boys in love in the school library, he feels immediately understood. Then he finds the note in the back pages, from an anonymous reader, asking whether anyone else feels the same way. Who is the mystery boy? and can their love survive under Section 28, a series of laws across Britain that prohibited any "promotion of homosexuality" from 1988-2003?

rep: gay MC; gay LI; bi tertiary character; lesbian tertiary character.
cw: homophobia; gay-bashing; threat of conversion schooling; rape threats; homophobic slurs.

Achingly sad and personally close to home, I found Boy Like Me to be an educational and relatable read. It's not funny like other Simon James Green books; instead it holds a deep anger based on his experiences of being banned from various schools in the UK because of his LGBTQ+ books. Rightly angry, and this comes across well in the growth of Jamie and the "rage against the machine" angst of Rob. I removed one star because personally I didn't enjoy the meta-analysis of the footnotes and found they distracted from the story somewhat, but I do understand the need for them in the sense that the author's anger really - and rightfully - comes across.

I absolutely loved the way SJG constantly ‘spoke’ to me during this book. He’s so funny. I loved Noah Can’t Even and don’t get me started on Jack from Heartbreak Boys.

I wish I could give this more than five stars. A very brilliant book
