I read this to the end because I wanted to know who did it. But it was a struggle to keep going, especially during the first half. Second half is much better as everything starts to come together.
I did find it quite overwritten in places. Not really for me.

Yep, its what you expect quite honestly. It's a murder mystery. Set at Christmas, but not overly christmas-y quite honestly. Despite reading this cuddled up with a hot drink with Xmas music playing in the background, the book itself didn't really inspire cosy, festive feelings.
But, the book itself is good. It is smartly written, the characters are well developed and the writing is actually surprisingly excellent. The prose is witty and sometimes lyrical, my only complaint is it is occasionally a bit too 'try hard.'
The plot is not particularly fresh and new (im afraid i guessed the ending), but it is one that is easy to dip into and to wish to stay in for a while. The protagonist can be a bit annoying though...but in an okay way, so all is forgiven.
Overall, a good read.

i do feel bad rating this book so low but i just don’t think this writing style is for me. i never really clicked with any of the characters or the plot and although it was a short book i never felt the urge to pick it up and finish it after putting it down
An easy and readable cosy crime novel, jolly and enjoyable with a Christmas feel. The first I've read by this author, I liked the heroine and the concept of her character and can see how she could translate to a series. My main issue, I found the period language used to convey the setting/era rather overwrought and heavy handed - it felt a bit forced which was distracting to read - but the plot and its twists and turns were fun to follow and inventive. Thanks to the publishers & Netgalley for the opportunity to read.

A jolly festive murder mystery with an excellent strong female main character.
Agony Aunt Daphne King is given the perfect opportunity to prove herself as a top class investigative journalist when she is on the scene for a suspicious death of an actor.
A got pacy plot and some fun characters make for an entertaining Christmas read.
It loses a star because of several annoying errors - the most annoying one being constantly referring to the character of The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come as The Ghost of Christmas Past

Was very much surprised by how much I loved this little cosy murder mystery. I really liked Daphne and the cast of the theatre quite a colourful bunch. The plot was good and the writing was quite beautiful, so really recommend it.
