Much of this book read like Cage of Souls in space. Three-hundred pages on the banality of being a political prisoner. Ninety pages of unique ideas of how life may evolve on an alien planet.

At, first, I was quite depressed by the setting of the book. It felt like there was no hope. But the when it ended I realized it was just good writing that drew me in so much I believed it.

What a beautiful arc and a beautiful message!

There are a lot of really cool concepts in this book. I was intrigued by the xenobiology and the extraterrestrial prison camp. However, the execution fell short for me.

The first section was quite slow, just setting up the scene of the alien world and prison camp. I found this interesting though, and I would’ve been fine with this if there was more of a payoff. The second section was the most enjoyable - quicker paced and had the most plot. The third section was, at first, frustrating as I felt I was left out of what was actually going on. Then, by the time you’re looped in, you’re completely hit over the head with the point for several chapters, and it’s quite repetitive. Not sure I can say it was worth the read considering that this last section was a slog with an unsatisfying ending.

Like a really cool story told by a grumpy man who is a bit up himself.
