Story about complicated relationships of family. Growing up. Smart writing.
this story dug wide but not necessarily deep + as a result i didn't develop strong feelings towards any of the characters or their development
I loved this book. The character development is so strong, they stayed with me for days after. This is a story of realistically flawed humans trying to navigate life and the situations that get thrown at them. While there isn’t exactly a climatic plot, there’s multiple character storylines that are somehow all wonderfully fleshed out that made this an enjoyable read.

The writing is so good that I wanted to finish the book, even though I found the main character insufferable at first. Astrid seemed cold and overly judgmental of everyone she came into contact with, but it was marvelous to see how she grew with the development of the novel.
There were a lot of impressively complex characters that were written beautifully-Astrid’s daughter was my favorite.

Eh. Started out great. An interesting story about a complicated family. Ended up with too many random half thought side stories that went nowhere and a waaaaaaaaay too nice and tidy of an ending. Book needed to be quite a bit longer, or needed an editor to chop out dead end story lines. And the whole ending needs to be rewritten.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. After starting last year, and stopping after a couple of chapters, I rented it from my local library and gave it another chance. I'm so glad I did. I like when books hop between the different characters, showcasing how the stories ultimately go together. It also helped me to see my own relationship with my mother and how she has worked to reconcile her mistakes from my childhood. It took a few days longer than I thought to read, but this was because I re-read some parts for full understanding and feeling.
