Alaskan Holiday

I really wanted to like this but Josie was the epitome of a wet blanket, and Palmer wasn’t developed at all. The result of this was a total lack of sparkle and chemistry, no tension and a dissatisfying plot progression. The best things about it was that it was a quick read, and by this time next week I will have forgotten ever reading it.

This didn't feel like a complete story. It started in the middle, therefore skipping any character development, and was 90 percent "telling" and only 10 percent "showing."

Very sweet Christmas romance! Simple plot, but still enjoyable.

I read the occasional romance and I read this because of the Alaskan setting. There is not much suspense as it is clear from the beginning that new chef Josie and sword maker Palmer are in love. But Josie has taken a job in Seattle, working for a renowned chef and feels that the small Alaska town will not offer her enough opportunities to perfect her craft. By accident, she finds herself staying behind with the winter locals but soon returns to Seattle. There was not enough Alaska to suit me and the characters needed fleshing out. It's a cute light romance that is sure to find its audience.

Thanks to Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to review this novel.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book. The actual story is a simple, predictable formula romance that gets 2.5 stars.

There are two narrators on this audiobook. Laurel Rankin narrates the chapters done from Josie’s point of view and Luke Daniels narrates from Palmer’s point of view. Rankin does a good job and gets 4 stars. Daniel’s narration is over-animated and the characters are exaggerated. His portrayal of Jack, an older man, makes him sound like a 90 year old cartoon character. Rankin’s portrayal of Jack is spot on. Daniels’ narration, unfortunately, is annoying and gets one star.

Debbie Macomber has produced a lot better stories than this one. It was rushed, predictable, corny, and cliche. Rankin’s performance lifts the book up to 3 stars.

After spending the summer in Alaska, Josie needs to get back to Seattle for her dream chef job. Becoming harder than she anticipated due to falling for one of the locals, she misses the last ferry off the island. Stranded and completely blaming Palmer and his marriage proposal, she needs to figure out how to get back home.

I picked this up because I absolutely love stories with food in it and I’ve always wanted to go to Alaska. This seemed like the perfect combo for me but it fell a little flat for me. I wanted more out of her roll as a chef but I did appreciate the description of the Alaskan wilderness. There were definitely moments where I thought it was so adorable but other times where I cringed a little too much. I did love the sweet hearted comments that kept spilling out of Josie and Palmer throughout the entire book though. Obviously written in a modern time with comments on pumpkin spice lattes as dating apps, it still felt like an old time romance that just tugged at the heartstrings.

1/5 stars

A clean romance book. Palmer and Josie don't do anything more than kiss. This was a very quick read. Each chapter in the book switches from Josie's perspective to Palmer's perspective. It is told in first person, so it can be a bit jarring at first to constantly switch perspectives. This story felt like a Hallmark movie because it was so clean and fairy-tale like. Good for a winter holiday read or for people who love Alaska.

Content: No violence, sex, or foul language.

A light, cute romantic story. I’ve never read any of her books, and this makes me want to read more.
