i didn’t mean to put this on hold, but apparently i had accidentally done just that, and when the book became available i felt like i had to read it. cute winter story that i will probably forget in a week.

My new favorite holiday read from Debbie Macomber.

This was a perfect one- day read, especially since that day was the day after Christmas during a covid quarantine!

A fun, quick read. I liked that the book started in the middle of things, instead of easing the reader into it.

An aspiring chef and country swordsmith fall in love over a blissful summer together in Ponder, Alaska. Come autumn, Josie needs to head back to Seattle to take a position in a high end restaurant. On the eve of her departure, Palmer proposes (awkwardly) to her but doesn't get the answer he hopes for and Josie leaves. They promise to stay in touch and see how things go but as the months go on, they communicate less frequently, largely due to Josie's long hours at work, and Palmer takes fate into his own hands and chases her all 2000 miles south to try and convince her to come back to Alaska.

This story was very short (4.5 hours on audiobook) and it starts when the couple has already established a relationship so there's not really any awkward get-to-know-you mishaps, but there are some awkward how-do-you-talk-to-girls moments. I enjoyed the cozy atmosphere of the Alaskan town and lodge, and I dug the Seattle descriptions (I'm from the area!). The characters were given big personalities, I think to make up for the book being so short and not having time to introduce them over a number of chapters, which was fine and well done. The one thing that bothered me was the narrator's choice of voices for some of the male characters. I get that it's a remote Alaskan wilderness kind of tale, but when your characters sound like cartoon representations of north Canadians, it's a little ridiculous and harder to get lost in the story.

I don't know, maybe I've read so many of these for this project that my standards have changed, but this didn't seem AS ridiculous as I was hoping from the premise.

Alaskan Holiday by Debbie Macomber is a sweet and cozy read. Super quick, but highly enjoyable. I personally love all things Alaska (I have been there a few times), so this story was a treat for sure. I loved reading about Josie and Palmer's love story. They are both characters that are easy to care about, so I kept thinking about them and had to make some reading time in the middle of the night, good thing it was the weekend! Thank you to Ballantine Books and NetGalley for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Typical Debbie Macomber: romantic and feel good.

Upon realizing that the story opens up already to the point where the man is thinking about working up the courage/moment to ask Josie to marry him...I am not invested in these characters at all to care about this, nor do I know them even a little bit. The feeling of starting in the middle immediately killed any enjoyment that I could have going forward. I love the premise...it just needed to start from the beginning.
