My go to reaction with this book was “WTF” over and over and over again! Also, Mimi had me audibly gagging!!!

“You know how when you’re a kid you can’t sleep because you’re afraid of the monsters under the bed? What happens if you start to suspect that the monster might be you? Where do you hide?”

A slow burn mystery, gets really interesting in the final chapters and the final twist was really unexpected.

I enjoyed the ride of this book and the twists and turns.
Finding out that Ben was alive pretty early on in the book when Sophie goes to find him kept me on my toes waiting to see when this would be discovered. I liked the fact that the caretaker was Mimi's grandmother and that she stayed on after her daughter died in childbirth (one of the club girls?). Finding out that Ben was so intertwined in the entire family (after finding out that they are a family!!) was interesting too, spoke to his charm and the way he wielded that for his writing. I totally thought Mimi killed him so finding out it was the dad and that the mother had the boys bury their father thinking it was Ben...so dark hahaha. Really enjoyed the surprising outcomes/twists in this book!

I have to admit that I really like Lucy Foley’s writing style as she always keeps me guessing. What I particularly liked about this one was the atmosphere she created in the Paris apartment building. Jess was literally the only likable character in the book. In fact at points I so disliked Ben I didn’t really care what had happened to him, but Jess kept me going. A few too many loose ends in this one- 3.5 stars.

A good, if a bit harrowing, story. I loved the setting of Paris and the immersion in French culture. I also enjoyed the sprinkling of French language.

The story was highly readable and past-paced. My main qualm is the severe lack of punctuation. The missing grammar made this quite difficult to read at times.

The characters were all horrible but that’s basically the point!
