A good storytime option because everyone loves Pete and there's some good basic math opportunity, but I worry that the song is something kids know and I would maybe need to learn that version or they could be bothered.

A little annoying the first couple of times you read it, but it really grows on you.

If the title doesn't grab you, nothing will. I liked the message of the story - that "buttons come and buttons go" but it's OK. There's a simple math lesson, too. Good stuff. Highly recommended by my four year old!

I read this for a preschool storytime about clothes. This one has a simple math component for each time Pete loses a button, the reader has to subtract one from the previous amount, starting with four. You could also focus on colors, because each of the buttons is a different color. I looked up the book on YouTube and was familiar with the little jingle you can sing for the refrain "My buttons, my buttons, my four groovy buttons."

I'd like to make a felt board of this story one day. It would be pretty simple and easy to put together-- although somehow I'd have to work it so that his shirt can open to reveal his belly button. Just didn't have time for now!

Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons is my first introduction to the series, and it did not disappoint. I'm familiar with the character and his popularity, but I haven't had a chance to read any of the books until now. In this book, Pete the Cat has a defective jacket that keeps popping off a groovy button one at a time. The story teaches young children simple subtraction skills, showing how many buttons are left in total after each one falls off the jacket. There is rhyming for every verse, which makes the book versatile for reading or singing. The book also creates a teachable moment about belly buttons! The illustrations are fun and vibrant, and I can see why Pete is so memorable.

My husband and I found the song version of the book on YouTube and now we can't stop singing it to one another, so readers beware

Buttons come and buttons go.

That’s literally so true. And bro never cries!!!! He’s such a cool cat fr. The music and audio is an absolute blast. The ending was silly, did not see that coming. I’ll mend his buttons for him if he wants. Regardless:

We keep on singing.

Pete the Cat is groovy AF.

Perfect for counting down. LOVED the ending of this Pete the Cat book! Better to have the Harper-Collins read aloud read the book to the kids than to do it myself. SO MUCH FUN!

someone give this cat a damn sewing kit

Eric Litwin Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons (2012) is a counting book with a beat! Pete is a laid back cat, wearing his favorite shirt with four groovy buttons, but they keep popping off. This book is good for beginning grades, but in order for the reader to predict what number is next, they must be able to count backwards and do some simple subtraction, thought the highest number is only four and the reader only subtracts by one each time. Because of this, I would put the target audience at age 5-7. James Dean illustrates the bright and colorful pages of the Pete the Cat books that are simple enough with still mirroring what the text is saying. The book is slim but has a rhyme scheme to it and even has audio you can play with the actual book so you can hear the rhythm and sing the songs the way the author intended them to be heard..
