I was really looking forward to this one, because of my enduring love for ancient Egypt...but it really wasn't Pratchett's best. Sort of disjointed, so the pieces of the story didn't really add up to a satisfying whole. Still, enjoyable enough to merit 3 stars.

This wasn’t my favorite Discworld so far, but it was still entertaining. I keep getting the feeling that I would be more invested in every single book if the protagonist wasn’t a man. This is my own hangup, but that’s the truth of it.
But this was fine. I really enjoyed the father (late King) character, especially when he became corporeal again.

I'm late to the party, but have finally read and finished a book that is totally by Terry Pratchett. It was enjoyable--sort of a Douglas Adams lite. I think one of the reasons it feels toned down is that everything in DiscWorld seems to be an analogue for something in our world. (I'm not entirely certain why the Egypt analogue was named after a Jelly Baby.) That gives things a little distance. With the HitchHiker books, Arthur was very firmly rooted in the banality of our own familiar world, and served as a more effective foil for the wacky folks he met.
There seems to be some debate over which one I should read next--I'll let you know when I find out.

Interestingly, as with many of the early Discworld books, I liked this less the most recent time around. Maybe it's been long enough since I first read them that the novelty has worn off. Now, that said, they're still great books that I'd recommend heartily--I just don't love these specific installments as much as I did before. Still full of fun and engagement and glorious, glorious punnery, and still very much worth the time.
