It starts slowly, but when it gets going it's totally worth what it took to get there. It's a mystery / adventure / horror story and I loved it. Once it really gets going, just about every chapter ends with a big reveal. I definitely gasped out loud reading it. Highly recommend. Reminded me a little bit of Scott Sigler's Earthcore a little bit.

This is the one book I have ever stayed up all night to finish in one sitting.

This isn't a brilliant book and it certainly isn't the "horrifying" and "scary" story many reviews claim (unless your threshold for scary is very low) and it often plods unnecessarily slowly along and there is some genuine lazy writing at the end.

HOWEVER,

I really quite enjoyed the premise and the overall story. It reminded me a bit of Michael Crichton's The Congo.

The characters weren't particularly memorable, and there was no real sense of the claustrophobic atmosphere the characters found themselves in.
If you tried to explain the story to someone, it would likely sound boring and lacking in events.

And yet, it produced the same level of enjoyment that a b-grade movie inspires. In fact, given the author's penchant for cinematic descriptions, this book would likely make a more enjoyable film than book.

A good sci-fi/adventure/thriller. Could see a couple of the twists coming, but a few were pleasantly surprising

Went through this book so fast cause it's so entertaining and fast-paced! I also really enjoyed the story as it's quite different from the usual thrillers I'd pick up.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF @ 20% because the main character was insufferably pretentious. BLEH.

At the start of reading this, I thought it was a BOTM dud. Didn’t feel like my type of genre and felt more like my husband’s. I am SO glad I stuck with it and kept going! This needs to be a movie!

This was crazy, loved it.

I really enjoyed it. It was definitely not a book that required much thought but if you like Indiana Jones or Josh Gates of Destination Truth / Expedition Unknown you will enjoy this book. I would absolutely be down for a sequel, I’m sad I owned this book for 2 years before actually reading it. I didn’t like the ex wife aspect though, that was some weird added drama that just didn’t seem necessary.
