This was a very good entry in the Dresden Files, but I am beginning to feel burnt out.
This felt like more of the same to me even though we get a lot of dire consequences coming out of this. I found the plot and mystery elements not quite as entertaining as other Dresden books. Like always, every thing constantly goes from bad to worse, but I just felt a bit bored at times. It was the first time the Dresden formula really bothered me and made me think it was quite formulaic. Keep in mind I was already spoiled on one the reveals though. I think it would have hit differently if I wasn't, but I'll never know!
Pros:
- Very fast paced, keeps you engaged with a lot happening.
- Good action, felt like a blockbuster movie
- Powerful consequences for the cast and Harry
Cons:
- The sexism!!! So tired of rolling my eyes at Harry. But it's also beginning to bother me that it's coming from a lot of the other characters too. Every man checking out a naked slave of the vampires and making comments made my skin crawl.
- Jokes and weird comments in very tense situations. I understand that this is like a blockbuster movie, but everybody is just gritty and quippy all the time. We know Harry's afraid because it's told to us, but we never see anybody be afraid and succumb even a bit to that fear.
All in all, a good book, but I think I will have to slow down my Dresden consumption for the future, to try and keep it fresh.

There was a pall over this book. I enjoyed it, but it had a heaviness from the first page. And lo and behold! In any case, rock on to the next one after this effing cliffhanger..... I wish I hadn't run into a spoiler somewhere along the line, so I will never know if the pall was me or if Butcher had actually turned up the heat in the tone of this one. I am thinking both.

Best one yet
A beautifully tragic ending (I'm not calling that a spoiler, as there were many different tragic ways this story could have turned out, from the beginning) did not quite make up for a disappointing plot. Somehow the plot felt more contrived than usual, without the usual explanatory pay off. Perhaps this was just because I knew the ending.
I will certainly read the next book, but I have to say that if this trend continues I might have to be done with this series.

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. Also, one of the most devastating. I fear I may never recover. ✌
