THE original slowburn lovers to strangers to lovers book. the template for all telenovelas. this is what colleen hoover thinks she is. bring back the days of courting, stolen glances, carriage rides, and calling cards. love seems so much better than the present day - no talking stages or situationships smh. what a wonderful love story full of yearning and joy; does this period in time a lot more justice than the brönte sisters, which to be completely honest, never really did it for me. wentworth seems to be an absolute gentleman, and anne really is the best of her family (not that there’s any competition), if not her community. she’s so well read and compassionate that i can see why everyone seems to fall in love with her. i don’t know how women didn’t go stir crazy in those times though - maybe we just live in an overstimulated world, but i feel like i would go insane living in england in the 1800s if it wasn’t for books, friends, and love.

i wish i could’ve seen some more dialogue and tender moments between frederick and anne, and maybe more of their original relationship. i knew it was coming, but it still felt kind of rushed, though the letter absolutely pierced my heart. they’re a perfect match, and the stolen glances and embarrassed blushes showed their passion for each other, but in terms of personality, it was hard to see how they got along together - it seemed like anne and benswick had more in common and more to discuss than her and benswick, but i’m also guilty of ignoring the people i like so i really can’t judge.

“I am half agony, and half hope,” - sounds like a lot of talking stages today lol, without any of the class or communication.

i also wish the ending was lengthened - i would’ve loved to know more about the days leading up to and following their marriage, and i really don’t like the last few pages; why talk about mr elliot and mrs clay?? their deception was an interesting subplot that i definitely enjoyed reading about, but i don’t care about them in the end!! and also the paragraphs of anne and her family dreading his deployment later… why end the book like that!! the war of 1812 will come very soon and it low key makes me think that frederick will be harmed… but whatever, ends on happy note so i guess im happy too. now i definitely need to read pride and prejudice to see what all the mr. darcy fuss is about

Listened to the Juliet Stevenson audio version this time. She is a fantastic narrator for Austen.

Apart from a couple of chapters in the middle, I really enjoyed this one. It felt timeless. The feelings and romantic situations in this book still happen today.

I've never met an Austen that I didn't like, and that pattern continues with Persuasion. The quiet musings of Anne about the world (and most of all, the people) around her are a joy to read.
