This play was not what I was expecting. I loved the character Eliza Doolittle, as well as Colonel Pickering but Henry Higgins was a piece of work. The issue I had with this play was that Henry Higgins did not have a redemptive arc, he does not have any character growth throughout the play which would make him an interesting character. On the other hand, Eliza Doolittle does have a lot of character growth, and I enjoyed watching her grow and learn.

I did not find it overly captivating, the play was lacking plotwise and some of the characters bugged me, which normally I can get over but because it is a play we see entirely through the dialogue of the characters themselves so it is hard to get over some of the characters. I believe that the characters are supposed to be unlikable, but it did lead to less enjoyment of the play altogether.

Fantastic play. In certain parts I could hear My Fair Lady playing. It's interesting to see how the ending changed when they took it to the silver screen.

Whoever thought Higgins character was an appropriate romantic hero must have been mad when they adapted My Fair Lady. He's the most insufferable arsehole. At least Shaw seemed to recognise this (to a degree). Reading the early parts of the play, where the accents are phonetically spelled out, was headache-inducing (although I understand the reasoning behind it), which did reduce my enjoyment of it.

2015 book challenge - a play

I definitely prefer the ending of Pygmalion to that of My Fair Lady!
