The singular saving grace to me in this play is Liza. I find her, and the loyalty that the other female characters have towards her, to be endlessly fascinating. Her agency is demanding, and she's nothing short of a firecracker. The rest of the play felt slow moving to me. Higgins was utterly annoying and Pickering—though kind—felt clueless.

I love this play. The lines are often identical to My Fair Lady and it is difficult to not simply imagine Rex Harrison saying Professor Higgins’s lines. I must admit that Bernard Shaw’s insistence that in the end Eliza does not end up with Higgins and does marries Freddy is such a relief. Higgins’s cruelty and bad treatment toward Eliza is consistent throughout the play, and for her to return to him would go against her strength and individuality. Higgins is smart and witty, but he is elitist and prideful, which the play makes abundantly clear. And while Pickering is at times just as thoughtless, you end up feeling that he is a thoroughly good person who tries to see others respectfully and who is sometimes incredibly thoughtful and kind.
The play also makes it abundantly clear that the men in the play are careless and short sighted compared to every woman in the play. Mrs. Pearce tried very hard to get Higgins and Pickering to think ahead, as does Mrs. Higgins in Act 3. And in Acts 4 and 5 Eliza joins them in the recognition that “what is to become” of someone is not a trivial question. But Higgins and even Pickering never seem to realize that.
