3.5 stars rounded down because endings have an outsized impact for me and this ending was just blah. I haven't read Who Fears Death so I did not know even part of this story. Some good, some bad, the plot was all over the place, time wise, which I assume was to give us a taste of Phoenix "slipping", it was a bit too scattered. Phoenix herself was great, I loved the build up until the burn down, I felt the losses and I am sure all of us at one point in time wanted to burn the whole world down so I was right there with her.

The inner jacket blurb says: "The Book of Phoenix is a unique work of magical futurist." This is equivalent to explaining a joke completely through the punchline before telling it. There are many amazing visions in the book, which go nowhere. The author seems to want to deliver a moral message, but never decides quite what it should be. The punchline never comes.

Phoenix is only two years old, but she has the body and mind of a 40-year-old woman. She's held captive in Tower #7 along with other speciMens, people of mostly African descent who are experimented on by the secretive Big Eye corporation. When Phoenix breaks out of the tower, she learns just what powers she might have and how to use them. She reconnects with other speciMens. She transports an alien seed.
There are a lot of layers to this post-apocalyptic story, which features action, mythology, and issues of colonialism, slavery, medical experimentation. It sort of read as a YA book to me.

Science fiction meets folklore, and in a way my continued impression of it is that this could have been a truly bizarre story out of American Gods. The pacing is well balanced with complex ideas and imagery, letting this skirt the edges of "hard sci-fi" without falling in and becoming overly analytical. Phoenix herself is an awesome character that had a habit of continuously defying my expectations of her in very satisfying ways.
