for some reason, i got it into my head that this book was about a spelling bee. i was greatly mistaken.

I wanted to love this book, and if it was only told from Little Bee's perspective I think I would have, but I hated Sarah. Sarah was a terrible wife, terrible mother, self centered human being, and her once chance at redemption still focused too much on her and not what she was trying to do.
I loved this from the first page. The writing is really beautiful. Some of the quotes will stay with me forever (the one about scars being beautiful because scars only form on the living thus proving you survived, comes to mind).
I thought the characters were beautifully developed and I liked the method of alternating chapters and perspectives to tell the story.

This was good and worth the blind buy. It doesn't tell you anything about it & tries just to get you to buy it based on that it's just good etc. but I don't see any harm in just telling people that it's about a refugee girl coming to England and the story she has to tell. I can say that much without giving anything away. There is lots more to it obviously, lots of themes but I'll let you work that out for yourself.
It's very readable and has interesting characters. certainly makes you think about how you would deal with things or what you would do.

A very unusual story but always fascinating - a hard book to put down. Was I happy with the ending - not sure - would definitely recommend it tho.
I had no idea what to expect going into this. Literally the book synopsis tells you that it won’t tell you a synopsis. And I guess I understand. Nothing could prepare you for what you experience in this story of sanctuary, civilization, and refuge. But I definitely didn’t expect the horrific details that came my way, which by no means were the deal breaker. If anything they only impacted the stakes and made you more anxious to see it through to the end. The problem was the end itself which was a little…lackluster? For something built out so eloquently and hopeful, the ending itself did not give the punch I was advertised.
This was really disappointing. The quality of writing was quite good at first, and the characters were engaging and seemed on the road to substantial development. At critical moments in the story, though, there's a sudden shift in style and pace that feels like a substantial downgrade.
An ambitious novel, one that has great sadness, some humor, and hope. I was really impressed with the author's ability to vacillate between wildly different voices: a teenage refugee from Nigeria, a young widow in a London suburb, and "the girls back home," all convincingly.
Little Bee is a wonderful character with some very difficult life experiences.
Favorite line: "I ask you right here please to agree with me that a scar is never ugly... Because take it from me, a scar does not form on the dying. A scar means, I survived."
