Sugimoto is a veteran of the Russo-Japanese war who earned the nickname “The Immortal Sugimoto” for having survived many near-fatal woundings on the battlefield. He heard there was gold left to pan in the Hokkaido region, so after the war, he set off to try to make a quick fortune in order to take care of the woman he loves. But, the rivers have already been picked clean. One day, he hears a tall tale of a group of prisoners with tattoos leading to Hokkaido’s hidden gold horde. What initially seemed to be the nonsense of a drunken man sets Sugimoto on an epic quest deep into the Hokkaido wilderness, teaming up with a capable Ainu huntress named Asirpa, and plenty more attempts on his life.

Much of this title is very intense and hyper-realistic, but grippingly engaging. Sugimoto and Asirpa are a fantastic duo - Asirpa is knowledgable about the natural world, while Sugimoto is exceedingly violent and keenly aware of the twistedness of his fellow man. The premise is slightly absurd, but Noda brings you in with this captivating tale and heartfelt motivation for Sugimoto that you can't help but be swept up immediately and along for the ride. The art is also extremely realistic with exquisitely detailed scenery in large panels and spreads that are beautiful to behold.

VIZ rates this series as mature. While this volume was not shy about showing the violence and viscera and including uncensored cussing, there were no sexual situations yet. Since it’s rated mature, there will most likely be nudity in the future.

My first manga, really enjoying the story and some of the  landscapes are beautiful, I like to take a few moments to contemplate  them.

This manga was made for me and only me, it fits my crazed hyper specific niche needs and likes. Ooooh Historical Homoerotic Comedy Manga no one understands you the way I do….

Actually, he decidido que voy a poner en mis reviews de GK mis comentarios, so here we go

- ME ENCANTA ESTE MANGA

- This manga mixes extremely niche subjects in a very seamless way: you have Sugimoto’s military background and his PTSD surviving the Russo Japanese war combined with the cultural info dumps that Asirpa offers about Ainu customs and traditions. These two very different characters perfectly work together and create a very educational manga jaja

- Although the main story plot is quite serious, the manga constantly shifts to a more comedic atmosphere and makes it easier for the reader to enjoy the silliness of the main characters

I picked this book up at the British Museum after seeing some of the stunning artwork from it at their current Manga Exhibition. I thought I’d try volume 1 and see if I liked it enough to read more. And I do. The artwork is fantastic and the story is compelling - it drew me in quickly and by the end of this volume I was hooked, left wanting to know what happens next. There’s also some interesting historical and cultural background to the story for fans who want more from their manga than an action, adventure or love story. Very happy I picked this up and will definitely be reading more.
