This second book was the first episode of the TV series, but there were many digressions, and the characters that seemed so perfectly cast in the first book were also quite different in this second one. I can appreciate both for their similarities and variances. It’s like two for one in the entertainment value - like so many what if tropes. I think I’ll stop comparing the two with the third book and simply enjoy the book for what it is.

3.5

No very big surprises imo. I hadn’t thought of Warren as an accomplice, but wasn’t very surprised either, it just didn’t do much for me. Though I understand Evan having power over Warren, I don’t get the setup of this crime. It also doesn’t fit Evan’s MO. He’s a molester, not a kidnapper. How and why Kayla was involved didn’t become clear either.
Someone (Victor) or a scene made intentionally creepy to set us on the wrong foot is completely fine with me, I actually like that, WHEN followed by a twist/surprise. Which wasn’t the case in this book. I’m always looking for the character mentioned in the beginning and then never again so we’d forget about them, who ends up being the culprit.
So yeah, I found the book a page turner but the end didn’t satisfy me.. Because it was a real page turner, I’m still giving it 3.5 stars but definitely not as enjoyable as Triptych, though as I said in that review, I didn’t find that ending very surprising either, all the surprises were in the first half of the book…
