The Turn of the Screw by Henry James is a classic Victorian gothic horror story that rewards readers willing to excavate its subtext.
The Turn of the Screw features all of the hallmarks of Victorian gothic horror: an unnecessary frame narrative; impossibly long, winding sentences; a preoccupation with wealth and old homes; evil lurking amongst beauty and respectability. As a ghost story, this book will never live up to the heights the horror genre has reached in subsequent decades. That’s perhaps an unrealistic ask of a text that formed the foundation of the horror genre. But that doesn’t mean that this classic doesn’t have value.
For me, The Turn of the Screw speaks with remarkable potency to cultures of silence and complicity around sexual abuse, especially child sexual abuse. Like our protagonist, my interpretation of events may or may not be based in what’s “real.” But this lens added significant dimension to my reading experience. I expect anyone with a background in the study of Victorian literature will find this book to be a fascinating dialogue with the issues and conventions of the time.

Romanzo molto particolare, lascia moltissimi interrogativi e tante opzioni conclusive a libero arbitrio del lettore, che in questa occasione non considero un pregio, soprattutto per romanzi di questa portata. Va bene un finale aperto, ma qui non mi è piaciuto come si è concluso.
La storia è principalmente una corsa contro il tempo per la proprietà di Bly della istitutrice di due ragazzi perfetti. Il racconto è esclusivamente dalla prospettiva della donna e spesso è costruita con cose o frasi non dette esplicitamente.
Non spiega molto, non sono riuscita a cogliere lo spirito gotico ed oscuro di questo romanzo come veramente avrei voluto (o magari che mi sarei aspettata). Mi dispiace molto della opinione e del retrogusto sciapo che mi ha lasciato in bocca, forse avevo un hipe troppo alto dovuto anche dalla resa Netflix che avevo visto.
Amo i romanzi gotici e dell'orrore, amo anche i romanzi che lasciano qualche interrogativo (gli autori non possono sempre rispondere a tutto) ma qui mi è sembrato tutto molto deludente e superficiale.
È stato uno dei pochi casi che ricordi (forse l'unico potrei dire) che la resa televisiva mi è piaciuta molto di più della versione cartacea.
E questo mi dispiace molto.

This has been on my classics list for a while, and when I found an audiobook version narrated by Emma Thompson, I decided to give it a go. This is a gothic ghost story written in 1898. It is definitely creepy, and I enjoyed listening to the development of the story. It was an interesting, fast-paced little story.
