You can definitely tell Shinkai is a movie director first and foremost, I mean he literally describes what the musical score should be at several points in the book ><
I have been an anime fan for years (many, many years like I used to buy very expensive imported VHS tapes) but had never actually read a light novel before. Probably because I like anime and manga for the medium itself.
My takeaway: fun.
Not sure if I'd seek out another 'cause the writing is kind of meh, but it was like reading a movie that I love. Moment by moment, scene by scene. With the added bonus that you get to see into the characters thoughts and feelings more deeply.

A love story written during the production of the film by the same name. Something about it leaves me with a sense of longing. Best enjoyed with the film, you won't regret picking this up.
Your name. Is quite different from Shinkai's usual work since this is done as a novel instead of manga or anime ( though all three mediums do exist for this story).The visual element he has such a beautiful talent with had to be transformed into words. Yet, Shinkai also has a talent for heartfelt stories and creating these real situations where the opportunities which would change our lives might just pass us by. Interestingly, I just got done watching Orange while reading this, which also has a time travel element and the overarching plot of trying to save someone with the knowledge you have about their future.
As I said, Shinkai's medium is usually manga and anime and because of that I feel like the writing style, particularly in the beginning, reads a lot like a screenplay instead of flowing prose. This is the main aspect that threw me off and led me to rate this as a 3. It also just seemed too short for me and I would have liked to have seen more interaction between the two main characters before the final scenes.
However, the story is heartfelt and endearing and the characters' connection is beautiful. That being said, I would have liked to have learned more about these characters. Probably what I liked most about this story was the idea of musubi that flowed throughout. I have not yet seen the anime adaptation but I already expect it to blow me away due to the animation alone, and now I know the story will be just as exquisite as always.

They converge and take shape. They twist, tangle, sometimes unravel, break, then connect again. Musubi-knotting. That is time."

The film is so much better obviously —Shinkai himself says as much— but it was still really enjoyable and for someone who loved the film as much as I did it was totally worth it.
Es sind eigentlich nur 3.5 Sterne, aber ich brings nicht übers Herz ihm 3 zu geben.
Es gab Passagen die mir sehr gefallen haben, der Stil war sehr interessant und anders (Bücher die aus Gedankenstrom oder halt sehr eng an der Perspektive des Protagonisten geschriebene sind mag ich immer, sie sind so selten!)
Allerdings gab es auch viele Probleme. Ds Buch ist großteils selbstständig, was ich gut fand, aber gerade zum Ende hin fehlen ein paar Stellen die ich denke, das sie hätten da sein sollen um den roten Faden der Geschichte stabil zu halten. Es wurden ein paar Stellen ausgeführt, die so nicht im Film vorkamen, was ich sehr gut fand aber das eine wiegt das andere leider nicht auf. Ich weiß nicht ob das Buch so funktionieren würde ohne den Film - und das ist nun einmal nicht gut genug für 4 oder gar 5 Sterne... leider!
Also ja, sehr gemischt - einiges war echt gut, eigenständig und schön. Anderes hat mich etwas enttäuscht. Ich denke auch das es recht direkt aus dem Japanischen übersetzt wurde, was man definitiv am Stil merkt (das stört mich meistens nicht so, aber manchmal eckte man schon an). Also ja... schön, aber schade. Das wäre merh drin gewesen!
Weil ich einige Teile aber wirklich sehr mochte und den Film liebe, gibts als Trostpflaster (vllt eher für mich selbst) den halben Stern auf die 3,5 drauf statt runter >.<
