Incredible scale. The OG of sci-fi. This is the first sci-fi book I ever read, and my favorite part was drawing a map of all the character names and connections. I love a good book where you're fully lost for the first 100 pages and have to reread them, and I love the scope. I am not a huge fan of the MC (or most of the characters) but this is a triumph. Turns out the characters are of secondary importance to me.
3.5
Epic space drama with a lot of political melodrama and long winded writing.
Space royalty take over a drought-stricken planet and get brutally wrecked. The son survives and becomes the chosen one.
Like Star Wars and game of thrones.
An important keystone scifi book with extensive world building and themes of power, religion and human beings relationship to the environment but it was too dense and long for me, I felt weighed down by it.

Four and a half stars
A solid book that lived up to the expectations I has going in. The time jump was a bit weird and after that it felt like the author was just skipping over things to get to the finish. Like oh look he's met a girl now they have a son and he's in love with her so much. Just felt a bit contrived. Great political manoveouribg though and lady Jessica is the true badass Heroine. Some aspects of this have definetly aged poorly and show that the author was a product of his time (which is no excuse for being a low key homophobe). Still other aspects read very well from a modern point of view such as the ecology stuff and colonists theme. So yeah, good but not great anymore. I'll probably check out the sequels at some point cause I've heard good things.

“Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic.”
Ok so I understand why people love this so much. The story itself was very intriguing and I loved the world building too. I really enjoyed the way in which information is revealed both about the story and the characters.
So all the bones are there for me to love this book. But...
I listened to this as an audiobook and personally, and unfortunately I don't know if I would have managed to get through it physically. Mostly because the writing style is just not what I usually go for in books. Because while it holds up well (which can't be said about every book from the 60s), it still felt quite slow to me. And while there is beauty in a slowly unraveling story, if you follow my reviews and see which books I tend to rate 4 stars and higher, you know its usually the faster paced ones.
Additionally I found it a little discouraging how many names there are to remember, especially when the author switches up why which names characters are refered to on occassion.
I decided to keep with it though, and over all it was a good reading experience.
I'm giving it 3 stars, goodreads categorizes that as 'I liked it' and that's about as accurate as I can get. I liked it, I don't regret reading it, but I won't be reading the rest of this series.
